Cannot tell you how excited I was to have a full gluten free menu to choose from especially when I thought I was buying food for the rest of the family and having beans on toast when I got back home! All our food was delicious and the view from the bench opposite the shop wasn’t bad either!
Edit: Thank you for your detailed response.
It's reassuring to hear that you do know a lot about coeliac and to know a detailed account of what measures you have in place to avoid cross contamination.
Coeliac reactions are quite severe and my body has only started to return to normal again now, two weeks later, so it sucks that it happened. But I do understand the difficulty in making sure everything is completely separate and safe, especially on a busy morning rush.
If I was to come back, is there anything I should have done differently to make sure everything is safe?
Old review:
Nice place but not very allergen-friendly.
As a coeliac, it always brings me great anxiety to find places to go out to eat, but this place seemed to have a good gf reputation. Unfortunately this was not my experience. The waitress serving us seemed to be knowledgeable about allergies and when I asked if cross contamination would an issue with their gluten-free meals they assured me that since my allergy was written on the order it wouldn't be a problem.
However, when my veggie breakfast came out, my toast looked suspiciously similar to everyone else's, so I asked one of the staff if it was gluten free and it wasn't. They were nice about it though, remade my meal and took it off the bill.
Although in their haste to remake my meal or perhaps just out of habit for non-coeliacs who just have a gf preference, I suspect that not all the precautions were taken, perhaps they put my gf bread in the same toaster as the regular bread or something because I left the cafe feeling extremely nauseous.
I hope that this was just an honest mistake, but perhaps refresher of cross-contact and food allergy safety is necessary here.
We treated ourselves to one meal out during our Cornish holiday and decided on Mousehole Deli & Kitchen. We were lucky enough to get a table window with lovely harbour views to enjoy with our food.
Our server (I think she was the owner) was very knowledgeable, friendly and personable and made us feel looked after without feeling like we were being swamped.
Our cocktails were on point and starters arrived quickly. We had the Poor Man’s Scampi and Sea Bass Ceviche (please make super sized portions for mains - they were amazing!). Our mains of steak and the hake were also lovely - especially the saffron potatoes.
For dessert we had the GF/vegan lemon meringue pie as my partner is coeliac which we’ve never come across as a dessert option before. Normally the GF option includes brownie or ice cream so this made a lovely change. It also helped that it was delicious!
Thank you for looking after us so well and for catering for our dietary requirements. Keep doing what you’re doing and ignore the petty low reviews - it was the highlight of our week.
Such a lovely, easy going café right by the sea. Staff are friendly, service swift and food is good. We had baps. One of us is gluten which was accommodated.
A great find! Good vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options in a generally decent and very reasonably priced menu in a small but friendly and character-full place including a very pleasant outdoor area.
The closing time listed seems to be the latest time to arrive or order.
Absolutely delicious, top notch can't fault it. Food, excellent, service, excellent, they even catered for our gluten free vegan with no problems. Also, dog friendly and a nice location
Had a lovely lunch at Stonesreef today, nice straightforward menu with plenty of gluten free options. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the gf options which reassured us and you really can’t beat the location being right on the beach. Had a pleasant chat with the owner who made us and our slightly barky border collie feel welcome!
The most beautiful cafe, serving delicious coffee! We loved the variety of gluten free and dairy free options, of which tasted just devine!!! Would definitely recommend.
Came for a quick bite at lunch, just ahead of the main kitchen closing at 15.00. Pleasantly surprised to find a very decent selection of gluten free options, and a wide ranging menu. Orders quickly taken and food arrived in good time. All delicious. Thank you!
