I tried Barcelona tonight with 4 friends. We had a reservation at 6:45 and we were not seated until 45 minutes past our reservation time (7:30). We inquired multiple times with the host about the status of our table and we were told it would be “just one more minute” as they were waiting for the previous party to vacate the table. We waited for another 20 minutes after this. The host told us that for the “first time in the history of Barcelona” they asked the party to leave. This was a bit off putting as the restaurant has been open for around a month. No one outright apologized for the 45 minute wait. When the manager stoped by our table he just said “I understand you had a long wait”. I had also inquired about a gluten free menu with the host while we were waiting and I was told the waiter will edit it for me when we were seated- which was slightly frustrating because then I couldn’t plan what to order ahead of time given our already long wait.
During the time spent waiting for our table, it was difficult to even place a drink order at the bar as it appeared there was only one bar tender actively serving all seats (assuming at least 20 people) at the bar.
We did appreciate the 4 compensated dishes that were brought to the table as a result of our long wait, but still encountered issues with these due to various reasons.
I had ordered a 6 oz pour of the Liquid Geography. A 3 oz pour was brought even though they confirmed a 6oz pour was rung in. This was remedied by the waitstaff.
They started with bringing us 4 “gluten free” dishes on the house including the hummus which ended up being not gluten free because of the crackers.
Our waitress then took my menu and manually edited it to remove gluten items. The problem is that my edited menu did not match that of another customers menu that had been posted in the Pittsburgh Gluten Free Facebook page. I was told the cauliflower and crispy cod were not gluten free. When I inquired about them again stating I had seen a picture of another edited menu for gluten free options, they then told me they were in fact gluten free. The entire interaction made me extremely nervous. They really need to get a dedicated gluten free menu instead of having the servers manually update it on the fly. Doing so just leaves so much room for human error which can be very dangerous if people have a serious allergy.
Overall the food was good and we enjoyed our waitress, as it was not her fault for the wait. I do think that they have many kinks to work out. I likely will not be back unless they implement a time limit on tables or can guarantee reservation times, and gain clarity on dietary information.
