I thought for a long time about whether I was going to leave this review. I chose to do it anyway. My boyfriend and I had been coming to Strandhuys for about two years, at least once a month, sometimes even more often. We really enjoyed coming there and I was able to eat gluten-free almost without any worries!
Unfortunately, a few weeks ago we had a very unpleasant experience/collision with one of the owners in response to my question about a gluten-free sandwich with a croquette (but with two, because the gluten-free sandwich is so immense - suddenly this was a problem and According to him, they haven't done this for a long time and what I said was therefore not correct according to him, while I had ordered and received this before without any problems). A no-brainer thing... I felt very unsafe because of his attitude, tone and passive aggressive attitude towards me. It turns out that the owner thinks "gluten-free people" are mostly whiners (these are his own words, not mine ;-)) and he is even about to stop offering gluten-free options.
I have never had such a strange and especially passive aggressive conversation and reaction from an owner of a well-run company (because honestly, they are generally doing a great job with the food and service).
The owner's attitude touched me. Talking consumption in my face, half leaning over our table and accusing me that I always "have so many questions" - which I know is absolutely not the case, even if I do have a lot of questions, this still doesn't seem to be a problem, all of this is putting it mildly... We are very sorry that this turned out this way. The reaction from my friend to the owner was also not OK. I understood the frustration about and around "the gluten-free people" and the gluten-free food very well and I was sorry to hear it (because they are super nice guests), so I offered him one-off free advice to relieve them of their worries. We loved coming there and thought highly of the boys (the two owners). I am particularly surprised by the response. Unfortunately, I have also noticed that the last few times we were there (especially the waiting staff) they have become less careful in serving gluten-free food (and they often leave this to the people). myself; that I don't think it's a problem, I like to think along, but of course I don't keep busy with repeating that I shouldn't have a cookie with my coffee or a cookie on my ice cream :)) But there are also many simple ways to do this. to be able to tackle this. I honestly think it's a shame to write this review and that I don't feel comfortable walking in given the owner's reaction and attitude towards me. We don't go there anymore after the last time. We hope that the owner will talk to us about what happened.
