We had to make sure we got some BBQ on our way out after stopping here earlier in the week and really enjoying it! They are very knowledgeable about gluten free limitations as well and have delicious fries! Their house BBQ sauce is divine.
We’ve been coming to Oak Island for over 18 years. One of the challenges we have every time we come here is being able to watch a sunset on the beach around 8PM and then still having enough time to get a sit-down meal at a restaurant where the kitchen is still open and serving the full menu in their restaurant - not in the bar area.
So, we were excited to learn that Paul’s was a new option for us. The menu and reviews looked good and the restaurant appeared to have some good gluten free options.
We arrived at 9PM at a time when there was plenty of seating available in the restaurant. However, we were told that we couldn’t sit there and needed to check in with the hostess which we did. She advised us that we couldn’t be seated in the restaurant area at that time because the kitchen was behind on their orders.
After waiting for 45 minutes, she called us up to be seated and advised us that the restaurant area was now closed and we would have to sit at a table in the noisy bar area at a table that had been vacant the entire time that we were waiting.
She never told us when we signed in that we were waiting to be seated in the bar area with a lot of noise and high-volume television sets and not in the dining area of the restaurant which is the main reason we came here. Not disclosing this when we signed in was in our opinion misleading so we decided to leave.
If you’re a customer thinking of Paul’s of Oak Island as a restaurant and sports bar, think of it as only a sports bar after 9PM.
A late call for take-out was met with a cheerful voice. "No problem" was the reply for the need for gluten free. The food was excellent and the late evening smiles were appreciated.
Hands down best pizza and wings. I had to wait over an hour, but so did a thousand other people. The staff is hard working and very pleasant. We have a gluten allergy and they are always accommodating. We come back every year!
I’ve been coming here for years and always love visiting! They have a GF menu, but stay away of anything fried if you have celiac (even what’s listed on the GF menu). They don’t have a dedicated fryer. I usually get the island bowl with chicken.
They do not offer a GF menu or list gluten free options, but they are very knowledgeable and are willing to accommodate any dietary needs. I’ve gotten their island bowls and chicken tacos with corn tortillas. They even acknowledge an allergy when dropping off my food. Just stay away from anything fried or the tortilla chips that are all in a shared fryer. This is a great place to visit right on the beach!
Pleasantly surprised to find this gem while visiting friends in Oak Island. Amazing smoothies, gluten free biscuits are delicious and tons of options for dairy free, gluten free and health conscious including supplements and care products! We even had their strawberry frozen ice cream on the beach. It was so yummy!
Have been wanting to try Kai-Joe's since the first time I saw it. The atmosphere is the perfect beach setting, walk up window, cheerful smiling staff, and the smell... oof it get's your mouth watering. We had a large order as we were getting takeout for a large family. My husband forgot to get his dad's tacos on corn tortillas (Gluten Sensitive), the owner very nicely made them again on corn tortillas, and then even gave us the extra tacos, so generous. The portions were more than generous as well. I had the Firecracker Shrimp Nachos, they were not overly spicy, they were dripping in queso and the shrimp was cooked to perfection. We ate at a different place on Oak Island every evening we were there and Kai-Joes definitely takes the cake for the best spot on Oak Island. I wish I would've grabbed some pictures of my food before I gobbled it up, but it was just too good!
Cape Fear Boil catered an even for us for 100 people. Everyone raved at how good the food was and how fun it was to see the food prepared right on site and served seafood boil style. We had quite a few locals who do their own seafood boils and even they were impressed. The staff was friendly and helpful all the way through the process before, during and after the event, especially considering I was dealing with a need for gluten free, egg free and nut free. I will definitely use them again!
I was so excited to visit Fixins after seeing that they offer GF biscuits and gravy, waffles, bread, sandwich buns and pastries! I got the biscuits and gravy and a cinnamon roll to take home!! The chef personally brings your meals out.
