As someone with Celiac Disease, eating in restaurants while travelling can be tricky. Reykjavik Kitchen was exceptional in every definition of the word. Not only was the service great, the meal (beef tenderloin) was mouth watering. The menu is clearly indicated GF where applicable and they had many options. I plan on coming back here several times as they have a few other traditional items I would like to try, such as lamb and meat soup. And they had GF bread with the delicious butter.

Very good cuisine😁, the dishes are neat and the taste is really there.
The waitresses are kind to explain to us based on a dietary restriction.
Quite expensive for a dish with 6 potatoes. The menu is quite short in choice and that's good because the fewer there are, the better the dish.
The desserts all look delicious but very few are gluten-free.
Five stars across the board! Food was incredible, staff was delightful, and the kitchen was so accommodating for my dairy and gluten allergies. Had the lamb tartare, the arctic char, and the roast potatoes with chimmichuri. Honestly, wish I would have eaten dinner here also because it was so good.
Strongly recommend visiting if you’re looking for a fabulous bite to eat in a very nice environment.
SO GOOD.
The Lobster Soup is a MUST TRY in Iceland. It’s celiac friendly and lactose free.
Good chunks of tender, melt in your mouth lobster. I will be dreaming of this soup for the rest of my life.
My mom had the shrimp skewer with sweet chili dip & potatoes which were also 10/10.
We entered cold and tired, we left reinvigorated and extremely full.
As a gluten-free option we could take the scampi and cream soup (good) and all the main dishes, i.e. the fish pans, absolutely great: generous portions and WOW flavours.
Informal but refined environment
Precise and kind service
Costs in line with the city
I am a symptomatic celiac and they were able to make potatoes in lieu of fries and served one of the best burgers I've had in a long time on a GF bun. My husband had a normal reindeer burger and said it was delicious! I would eat here again knowing I was well cared for the first time!
Service was great! Food was even better! As a celiac they were aware of myneeds and the menu clearly labeled. I was able to get a 3 course gf meal here. Very good choice.
You have to come here. You Have To Come Here. YOU HAVE TO COME HERE!
They have one of the best (if not the best) fish soups I have had in my life❤️❤️❤️
If you’re celiac, they have specially prepared lamb or tomato soups. You can have as many lamb or tomato refills as you want. Their service is super friendly.
Prices are more than fair for Icelandic average. And, there were FREE Waffles?!!
I would give 6 stars if I could 🤩

For anyone traveling with dietary restrictions - you have to go here! Second trip to Iceland and second trip to Tapas barinn. We took this trip with a different group of friends than our first trip and this was one of our only requirements as to where to eat and it did not disappoint anyone (and we set high expectations for this place). Most important thing for me was how amazing they handled my dietary restriction. I have celiac disease which can make eating out very difficult and I had absolutely no problems and did not feel like I was left out of any part of the dining experience and for those that have dietary restrictions, you know how this is very common. I didn't get sick at all, I was take very seriously, and they explained the protocols they would take. Every time they dropped of a plate they would say "gluten free tapas" so I knew they were handing me the right plate, enough to let me know but not over the top to make me feel uncomfortable. I had the chef's experience (last time I had the Taste of Iceland) along with my husband (who does not have a dietary restriction) and the changes they made to some tapas for me were no big deal at all, we both equally enjoyed our meals. Also, highly recommend the Taste of Iceland experience for first timers but the chef's experience was equally amazing, just think the Taste of Iceland is something everyone should try at least once. The overall atmosphere was amazing, staff could not have been friendly or more knowledgable of the menu. It is slightly pricey but 100% worth it. We did this as our "fancy" date night and we could not have asked for a better experience. Again, must go for anyone with a dietary restriction!
I felt like the menu was created just for me! Gluten free, potato free, good spice, loads of veggies and creative menu that didn’t default to potatoes- this last detail is actually the most magical- everywhere we went it was a challenge to find veggies that were not potato. Fantastic flavors and super satisfying- wish we could have brought this restaurant home!
One of the best restaurants in Reykjavik. The cod is very tasty. Great mix of tastes for the senses. The only negative thing is I think the portion are a tiny bit small. The chef can adapt meals to be gluten free.
Ate dinner here a few times during our stay in Reykjavik, lovely food and service.
Pizza's we're offered on Gluten Free bases, safely ate here as a Coeliac.
Nice place they have gluten-free options but obviously can not guarantee cross contamination, but they do try and make an effort. Food was delicious and the staff was friendly and helpful.
We recently had lunch at this restaurant located in a food court in Iceland, and overall, it was a pleasant experience. We ordered a burger and lamb.
Although they didn’t have gluten-free buns available, they were accommodating and made adjustments to the burger, which I appreciated. The lamb was tender and flavorful.
The service was efficient, with a distinct fast-food vibe, though the quality was noticeably higher. You order at the counter, receive a device, and then pick up your food when it's ready. It’s a convenient system, especially in a food court setting.
Overall, everything was good, and I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a quick yet satisfying meal.
Great to find a vegan gluten free restaurant right in the middle of Reykjavik. We enjoyed our pad thai and pineapple rice. Both well presented and good portions. Prices are not bad to be in Reykjavik, lower than average as far as we could see from various menus around. We admire the values and ethics of this place both in terms of respect of nature and environment and for the inspiring and hopeful name. Thank you and keep up the good work.
We found ourselves here because two people in our group have celiac disease and needed safe gluten free options to eat. This was on our first night in Iceland, so we were tired and not being as careful as we should have in terms of checking pricing. Our meal was outrageously expensive (especially for the small portion sizes and casual atmosphere), and what really killed us were the three margaritas we ordered. They were $23 each!! And they weren't even good. The food was good, though.
ABSOLUTELY EAT HERE! It was that amazing we are here twice! The staff were very friendly and went above and beyond! Nothing was too much trouble! The first night we went for a beef steak and then the next night we went for a variety of beef steaks, burgers along with whale and horse steaks!
All the food was AMAZING and the best steak that I have ever had! I also have a gluten allergy and the staff were knowledgeable around what could be eaten and there were loads of options!
We also celebrated my mums birthday here and the staff definitely added to the celebrations to make special memories.
If you are celiac or have a gluten sensitivity, I’d highly recommend this restaurant for you. The staff was so knowledgeable and helpful. They were able to create most things on the menu gluten free. They brought out fresh bread that was gluten free with an olive tapenade. The lamb was delicious. But the star was the coconut crème brûlée with passion fruit ice cream.
Best meal in Iceland. The lamb was probably the best lamb I’ve ever had. Staff was extremely accommodating and friendly. Partner has a gluten intolerance and they helped us navigate the menu and were great with substitutions. Highly recommend!
Lovely food, at breakfast a separate table with food and toaster for people with celiac disease. Had a room on the 12th floor facing west and sunset. Fantastic view! Fridge, kettle with accessories, slippers and dressing gown. Lots of cupboard space. In the large bathroom, both a shower cubicle and bathtub and organic small items. The room is only cleaned on request the day before. The only negative was the slightly long walking distance to the center for those with leg problems.
Stopped here during the Reykjavik Geopark tour. The soups are good (and gluten free) with one refill. This is a very expensive restaurant in comparison to ones in Reykjavik.
The soup and coffee is self serve which is very convenient. The service is very fast for anything else that is ordered. All in all, a good experience, just unusually expensive.
Amazing Icelandic food options! We tried the puffin, whale, horse, and lamb. The menu isn’t marked gluten free, but staff is knowledgeable about modifications that are possible. I have celiac and didn’t get sick.
We had an amazing dinner and enjoyed it a lot! Also gluten-free was no problem and I had the same amazing experience like my husband. The service and the chef were very friendly and we felt very welcome. Thank you so much. Food was - of course - outstanding.
My husband and I went here on a whim. I cannot recommend it enough. The Reykjavik mule was 10/10. We did tapas and had: pan fried perch, potatoes, carrots, butternut risotto, and the seafood soup. Everything was amazing and gluten free. I will be back!
Absolutely delicious flavors and dishes. We have eaten dinner here two days in a row—it’s so good! The best meals we have eaten in Reykjavík. Very attentive and accommodating waiter, Nico. Extremely easy to eat gluten-free here, too. The fish of the day is beyond amazing! Highly recommend!
Food hall with a really good vibe. Lots of food choices. Fish of the day from Finsen was amazing. There was a gluten free beer at one of the bars (Gull Lite).
Absolutely Delicious & Exceptionally Welcoming – A Must-Visit in Reykjavik!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Visiting from California, tonight I stumbled upon Shalimar Restaurant during my trip to Reykjavik - Center Plaza, and I’m so glad I did! From the moment I walked in, the staff made me feel completely at home. What stood out right away was how thoughtful and accommodating they were about my gluten-free needs—something that’s not always easy to find when traveling internationally.
The food? Incredible. Rich, authentic flavors that instantly transported me back to the kind of home-cooked meals you dream about. Every dish was perfectly spiced, fresh, and deeply comforting. You can truly taste the love and tradition in their cooking.
Whether you have dietary needs or just want to enjoy real South Asian cuisine in Iceland, Shalimar is a gem you shouldn’t miss. Warm hospitality, amazing food, and a cozy atmosphere—it felt like a little piece of home in the heart of Reykjavik.
Highly, highly recommend! 🌟
WARNING
Items on menu are marked gluten free, yet are in fact not gluten free. I found out too late and have been in pain since visiting.
They did offer to remove the items I ordered from the bill but not sure if they followed through on it as my father in law took the bill.
Food was slow and flavours were ok. The atmosphere was nice.
Out of the many dozens of places I've dined at in Iceland over the years, this is hands down one of the best (and one of the best of all my travels). Every dish from start to finish was really, really excellent. I was nervous about trying Japanese Italian fusion, but it turned out to be spectacular. I highly recommend going with the staff suggestions as all of those dishes were a win. The milk bread and nori with the miso butter and tofu spread were our favorite. The Bikini crumpets were unreal in how good they were; the flavor and texture were outstanding and my favorite dish. We also had the crudo and carpaccio. The crudo was very bright and fresh, but it does have cilantro (not listed on menu) so if you have an aversion it might not be the dish for you. The carpaccio was the best I've ever had anywhere in the world; the use of hazelnuts was incredibly delicious. The lobster pasta and ravioli were incredible and the past was cooked perfectly al dente with so much flavor. The Amalfi lemon dessert was so unique and the gluten free pastry served with it was incredible! I would eat here over and over again. The food, atmosphere, and staff all make this place a must-not-miss if you're in Reykjavik.
