I'm sad that Counter Culture is closing but grateful that I was able to enjoy it for so many years. This place was ahead of its time, offering vegan options before they were readily available at grocery stores, food trucks, etc. The cashew cheezecake is amazing, and I ordered several of them for my birthdays over the years. The gluten free mac'n cheeze is also out of this world. Thank you, Counter Culture, for showing us that we don't have to torture animals (or our own bodies) to enjoy our favorite comfort foods.
Absolutely wonderful place for gluten-free (GF), vegan, and soy-free pastries, cookies, and sweet bread (mainly cupcakes. They also have a variety of music, stickers, stones, clothing, and other merchandise available plus non-merch clothing. Huge bonus that the plastic that things are individually wrapped in are all compostable as they are made from plant-based renewable resources.
As of early May 2025 Google maps does not take you to the restaurant or even a good place to park for it- it takes you closer to Tweedy's bar parking. The parking behind Out of the Closet thrift store, across the street from Antone's records, is better parking and a much less complicated walk to the entrance. It does look sketchy, but at no time did I feel unsafe (I went around 5-6).
Best Vegan Pizza in Austin!! We got the Meat lovers and Pina Jalapeño. I find it hard to find good vegan pizza with Gluten free crust and this had it all🍕
I brought a group of eleven here. I called ahead but when I got there they had forgotten to reserve seats for me. It was crowded but after a ten minute wait they accommodated us. The service after that was decent. The food is really representative of Tex Mex. I had the fried stuffed avocado and it was delicious. A vegetarian gluten-free guest was able to get something that worked for them. Trudy's is definitely worth a visit but be careful when bringing big groups.
