Last Friday I visited Robert's for the first time with six out-of-town guests. I had heard other Chicagoans rave about Robert's, so I wanted to give it a shot. I generally won't review a restaurant unless I've been at least twice, but I won't return to Robert’s for another food experience because I am Celiac and it not a safe pizza eatery for me. Food I was disappointed that Robert's promotes a gluten-free crust, but in reality they use a gluten-removed crust. While this is totally unsafe for Celiacs, this would still impact many people who are gluten-intolerant. What's the point? I recommend Lou Manalit's if you are looking for a safe gluten-free experience. I had the Apple Hazelnut Salad which was fine, but $17 for a salad without a meat addition is pretty steep pricing. The kids enjoyed their Brussels & Bacon Pizza and the burger was standard. Both Sauvignon Blanc by-the-glass options were subpar, but the Manhattan was fantastic. They have the good cherries :) Service I preface this review by saying only two other tables were seated inside during our visit. Our service was abysmal. Our server took our order and did not return until she brought our check (which we had to find her to return). The burger came out 25 minutes after the rest of the food and there was no apology or remedy on our check. The burger was for the five-year-old, who has a milk allergy, so couldn’t eat anything else we had. We were shocked to see a 20% gratuity due to our party size (7) and felt that our server was aware she would receive a tip regardless and provided zero service. Additionally, I'm fairly appalled that this business charges a 2.5% fee for "Employee Benefits." It left a bad taste in my mouth that they are visibly passing this cost onto their customer. Include it in the overall pricing if you must, but it isn't a good look that you aren't taking care of your employees on your own. You can ask to have this removed, but I'm sure this business knows this makes the customer feel guilty and they will not make this request. Ambiance The ambiance here is unmatched. Sitting on the dock might be one of the best kept secrets in Chicago. The indoor seating in the front part of the restaurant is also pretty great. Value The value for Robert's is only in their location/ambiance. You can definitely find more delicious pizza all over the city, a far better wine selection, and if you are worried about gluten - many other options. Although I'll never fully dine here again, but I might return for a Manhattan and Caprese salad on their dock if I'm in the area. If that’s what you’re looking for - don’t pass up Robert’s.
