940s Kitchen and Cocktails

I read several reviews before I wrote this, just to be sure my experience wasn't a one-off thing. Many other reviewers had similar comments, so I think it's probably a consistent problem... We visited on Tuesday right around 8 pm. There were about 4 people at the bar, and we were the only table. The service was friendly, but not particularly attentive especially given the lack of tables. We ordered unsweetened tea with sweetener (because it's 0 calories). The server brought us unsweetened tea and a container of simple syrup... which um. Isn't 0 calories. But uh... Fine. I guess. We ordered the Chips & Dips appetizer with Pimento Cheese and Salsa. The Pimento was incredible - like normal Pimento cheese, but with a little sweetness to it. Very very good. The salsa, on the other hand, was pretty flavorless. Almost like there was no seasoning in it. Assuming it probably came out of a bag, we just asked our server to swap it out for guac instead. The server didn't even ask why, which gave me the impression that he had replaced that salsa before... Unfortunately, the guacamole was just as unseasoned as the salsa. 0 salt. And I really mean that sincerely. It was just mashed avocado. There was no lime, no salt. It was just a deconstructed avocado. For entrees, we shared the Classic Burger and the Pot Roast. The Classic Burger was fine. The beef was (maybe) lightly seasoned. The house-made pickle was the most flavorful thing on the burger, and that was about it. The pot roast, and the mashed potatoes it was served with, had (you're not gonna believe this) no salt. No seasoning whatsoever, and I promise I'm not exaggerating. We were hungry, so we ate it. But we were pretty dissatisfied. Now it's entirely possible, given that this is Denton, and they didn't have artificial sweetener, that it's some sort of hipster, organic, salt is bad, non-GMO, non-processed, health-conscious, gluten sensitive, non-hormonal, anti-corporate thing that I'm not sophisticated enough to understand. So maybe I'm just wrong and unrefined. But I can't imagine why the kitchen wouldn't salt any of the food. We would not return. Beautiful restaurant. Used to be quite good!

Holy molé, this place is top shelf. Downtown, and rightly so. The environment was upbeat and energetic and classy. The food was soooooo good. It's a little tricky if someone in your party is gluten intolerant, but the staff was very helpful in making it happen. You can't just take anyone to this place, it should be reserved for the special people in your life. Reservations are recommended.

Went here because of the great reviews, and food variety. They were out of 1 of 2 craft brews, they were out of the only gluten free appetizer on the menu, and they were out of one of the few vegetarian dishes. Every time we tried to order something they were out of something else. Almost became comical we should have seen the light and left. Food was good, service was fair, but not really the variety we were looking for.
