Astrea restaurant Ano Platanias

A hidden gem a little higher up, in Platanias, Crete – definitely worth a visit! Normally it is hard to find unique restaurants in Greece, I think. Same menu, and boringly prepared food – but this one stands out significantly. Only a four-minute drive from the beach is this mountain restaurant, which really surprises. The food is first-class, the ingredients are fresh and lovingly prepared – and even the gigantic portions were almost eaten up! I had two starters and a main course. First, four Greek dips with homemade gluten-free bread (because I am gluten intolerant) – two large slices of melted cheese, so delicious that you wouldn’t believe it was gluten-free. Then, a crispy fried provolone with breadcrumbs (again gluten-free), jam and caramelized pickled onions – a heavenly combination. For the main course: steamed fish with shrimp in parmesan sauce and grilled vegetables – flavorful and filling. Cocktails? Fantastic. We tasted, among others, a Macadamia Nut Espresso Martini and a “Jimi Hendrix” with Hendrick’s Gin, elderflower, cucumber juice, etc. – both perfectly balanced. The bartender also made a special cocktail with ouzo and a secret “foam” that was reminiscent of meringue with fresh notes – incredibly creative and delicious. The children had homemade chicken nuggets, tender and tasty. My wife had vegetable soup and wok-fried beef for a starter – all well-cooked. The wine – a blend of Chardonnay and a Greek grape – went perfectly with the fish. For dessert the children had cheesecake with strawberries – a sweet ending. The waiters were super friendly, attentive and passionate. You can clearly feel that they care about both service and quality here. You can feel that the food is made with love, from the best ingredients, an unexpected, unforgettable experience. 10/10! In addition, there is an absolutely fantastic view, but remember to book a table and ask for the best view if you want it to be extra beautiful.

As a coeliac in Greece I could not believe my luck when I opened the menu. So many gluten free options. I had a delicious gf bread and Tzatziki with GF cheese saganaki, followed by a red snapper mornay. All the food was delicious. My husband had a salmon tagliatelle and son had the kleftiko. I noticed they also do gf pizza and pasta. Absolutely stunning views and fabulous service. I would highly recommend this place especially if you have dietary restrictions like I do.
