Just returned home replete from an absolutely delicious lunch enjoyed on the verandah in balmy weather at the Birdwoods Cafe in Havelock North, Hawkes Bay. Two of us ordered the pork belly on potato rosti which was both meltingly tender inside but crisp and crunchy on the outside and two had the Birdwoods pie which were bursting with succulent beef. There was no plate envy on this occasion. Our desserts were the moist gluten free chocolate brownie, a chocolate mousse and the rhubarb cake. So so delicious because they tasted authentic as real food should. We happened across Birdwoods from a brochure of local eateries picked up in Havelock North. We had previously tried to find a venue for high tea in the area online, without too much success, but we popped in and made arrangements for the following morning. Well, we certainly fell on our feet!! We have had a few high teas over the years, and this certainly rates as being up there with the best that we have had. Not vast quantity but enough, with exceptional quality and presentation. Particularly with one being both gluten and meat free, with all the swaps perfectly considered. The chef talked us through everything on the plates, and the staff were immaculately turned out and very attentive. Couldn't recommend it highly enough, perfect for a special occasion with something for young and old, with the additional sculpture garden, olde worldy sweet shop, wonderful gallery shop, and even some Ostriches. Booking is essential so as not to be disappointed. Thank you to all at Birdwoods for making us so welcome
