When deciding where to celebrate a milestone in Bangkok, the Blue Elephant was highly recommended. To our surprise, there were quite a few gluten-free offerings. Everything you will read about here was prepared gluten-free, including the morning glory.
The food. Everything we ordered was truly excellent, from the cocktails to the desserts. Everything was magnificent, prepared with attention to detail, and served with flair.
The details. We secured a reservation a week in advance for 6:30. However, we were stuck in Sathorn Road traffic for nearly three hours in the pouring rain, missed our reservation, and managed to secure another reservation because it was so late. Thankfully, the restaurant graciously held our table. If you're planning on heading over, may we recommend the BTS train system? You'll have a more enjoyable evening this way.
We were immediately seated and given the menus. The piña coladas were excellent! For some reason, some of the piña coladas were served in a coconut while others were served in a glass. We couldn't figure out the difference except to add here that consistency should be considered.
Going down the receipt here: the beef satay was the best we've had in Southeast Asia--compared to Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. No overpowering smoky flavour. Just good satay. The papaya salad was good but spicy. The tom kha gai was delicious! Served in a fresh coconut with strips of free-range chicken. It was delicious. The tom yam koong was ok and so was the mangrove crab curry. The massaman lamb was OMG delicious and something to write home about! Exquisite in taste, with lamb stewed delicately in a bath of spices. This dish was truly a star. However, big however, some of the lamb pieces were tough. Although the lamb was mostly tender, the tougher pieces threw us for a loop. How could such an amazing dish have this inconsistency? So the lamb dish was amazing in flavour, the mangrove crab curry was amazing in taste but still needed an additional something to put it over the top.
Desserts. The flan was the winner. We highly, highly recommend the flan. It will blow your mind with its taste and creaminess. Amazing. The mango sticky rice and the red rubies were yummy but not nearly as amazing as the flan.
Beverages. The coffee was ok, the cocktails were delicious, the ginger tea wasn't strong, but the piñas were yummy.
Ambience. Amazing! AMAZING! Do take the time to admire the architecture and interior decorating; even more beautiful than the photos. Similar to the old mansions in Malaysia, the interior of this building is simply stunning.
In summary: dining at Blue Elephant is a once in a lifetime experience. Although yummy, it's best to order the popular dishes (the massaman lamb) to avoid running up the tab sampling the best of Thailand, because it's not the best. At 8,500 Baht in Thailand, the expectation is that we should be blown away. For a third of the price, one can enjoy Prai Raya (Sukhumvit) multiple times, where the service is decent and the food is delicious!
