I used to love the co-op but unfortunately they are not up to par on allergy safety recently. I can’t eat gluten, and the last three times I’ve eaten there I’ve gotten pretty sick. While I understand that cross contamination is a risk in any restaurant type of place, the co-op liberally labels things as “gluten free” when they clearly are not. They have also started putting gluten pasta in the middle of the salad bar, with pasta falling into adjacent food items and scoops being swapped frequently. When this was pointed out to the manager it was explained that this was for the comfort of vegetarians, who didn’t want the veg pasta near the meat…vegetarians have a choice in the matter and do not get sick from careless food safety practices.
I’m totally disappointed in the current management for the lack of thought towards food safety (which should be a primary concern for an establishment serving food) as well as for the unwillingness to discontinue practices which are a barrier to inclusion and accessibility for community members with heath concerns. This behavior isn’t in the spirit of the co-op I used to love so much.
