Having previously dined at Indigo, a fully gluten-free establishment, I was eagerly anticipating the afternoon tea here, which also caters to gluten-free requirements. Unfortunately, the experience was deeply disappointing due to a significant lapse in gluten-free protocols. My girlfriend, who is coeliac, began feeling unwell within 30 minutes of our meal, suspecting gluten contamination. Despite my reassurances, based on Indigo’s reputation, she experienced severe stomach cramps and bloating that worsened and persisted throughout the night.
This suggests that the same rigorous care in preventing gluten contamination was not maintained during our afternoon tea. Regarding the meal itself, the sandwiches were enjoyable, but the desserts and tea did not meet expectations. The service, while highlighted by the kindness of staff members like Samuel and the lady who greeted us, was marred by long wait times between seating, courses, and an unfulfilled request for additional tea when our server's shift ended.
The hot chocolate was a highlight, yet overall, the afternoon tea experience felt average, taking aside the gluten contamination issue. For coeliacs, I understand there may not be many afternoon tea options, however this is a serious concern, and adherence to strict gluten-free protocols is crucial.
