I can hardly believe how lucky I was to select Chef Brandon Rogers to do my husband's 90th birthday party. It was a small but challenging assignment. The food had to appeal to guests with ages ranging from 12 to 90 and be celiac friendly. It would be at an assisted living facility with very limited kitchen access. And I had no idea about what I wanted the menu to be. I was so clueless about what to serve and so stressed about being clueless that my daughter kindly took over the menu planning. All I knew was that I wanted to celebrate both my husband's 90th birthday and our wonderful family with great food but do it at an affordable cost. Added to this was the surprise challenge on the day of the event caused by none of the party planners remembering that the party was on the day of the Chicago marathon or realizing that the facility was in the middle of the course. Enter super-chill Chef Brandon. The food was amazing. A simple salad but with fantastic and gluten-free croutons topped with a dressing to die for. I thought I didn't like chicken legs -- until I had his. Polenta that was sublime. Charred broccoli that made it hard to believe it was healthy for you. And all this without any access kitchen facilities because our timing was so messed up by having to get around the marathon that the facility kitchen was totally closed to us. Most amazing of all was the dessert - described as a gluten free cake with macerated fruit but was actually heaven presented in individual dessert dishes with sauces whipped up on the kitchen-free spot.
