My partner and I took a trip out to Sherway Gardens on a Friday morning to do a little shopping. When noon showed up with an appetite, we decided to catch a bite at the Sherway Eataly. While not as large as the location at Manulife, Eataly Sherway is still a bright and busy location full of wonderful Italian delights and worth visiting.
We saw on the board out front that they were offering an “Italian Lunch” – a 2-course menu for $24. Why not. We checked-in with the reservation desk and were promptly seated at a table in the center of La Piazza. Our server, Stephanie, offered us our choice of flat or sparkling water and menus were dropped. She explained that the dishes on the menu are prepared in 3 separate kitchens at Eataly, each preparing their specialty. This may result in food coming out on their own schedule, but she promised to do her best to ensure that our plates arrive together. Good to know ahead of time.
The lunch special menu is on small white card with red print that lays out our choices. There were 5 antipasti and 8 piatti – 4 salads and 4 pastas, including were vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. C decided to start with the zucchini fritti – fried zucchini, lemon aioli and flaked sea salt. These “fries” were incredibly delicate and tasty when dipped into the aioli. I had Ferrarini mortadella with pistachio pesto on toasted sourdough. I'm not normally a fan of mortadella (maybe it’s the name…), the pesto added a smooth nuttiness that overcame the “baloney-like” flavor of the mortadella. Plus, I could trade 1 piece for some fries….
For our second plates (came out together), we both ordered pastas: C had Alfetra Spaghetto, Cosi com Datterino tomatoes (small, date-shaped and naturally sweet) , ROI EOV, sea salt - served piled up high on a hot plate; and I had the housemade Casarecce (a short, narrow twisted tube-shaped Sicilian fresh pasta resembling a scroll) cherry tomato and almond-pesto, with grated pecorino romano. Again, both dishes arrived on “hot” plates (VIP for me) and were in a word: delicious.
To accompany our meal, we each had a glass of Jasci Pecorino d’Abbruzzo Tierre di Chieti IGT. At $22 per glass they cost as much as our meals. Nevertheless, an enjoyable pairing, if a bit pricey.
In summary, if you like what Eataly has to offer, and who wouldn’t, it is worth the drive out to Etobicoke to experience the Sherway venue. From the moment we arrived, we were offered that special and professional attention that Eataly staff routinely deliver. Our server Stephanie was lovely, engaging us in a friendly banter about Italy and Eataly. She made our lunch more enjoyable. The food was prepared fresh, and the presentation and flavor were outstanding – something a large venue may not always deliver. But then they have 3 kitchens. Always fun to try some new Italian dishes that I’ve never heard of. And for that, Eataly Sheway did not disappoint.
