We want to record what happened at this ice cream shop because it's quite serious, and these kinds of accidents just can't happen.
We went to get ice cream with our young son because they have gluten-free ice cream and cones. It was a busy day, so we asked for gluten-free ice cream, which they have in another cooler. To avoid any contamination, we asked for it in a tub and bought a separate cone that we would open ourselves. They gave us the tub and, without asking, put a cookie on top. We asked twice if that cookie had gluten, and they said no. My son took a small bite of the cookie, and upon examining it, we thought it was too similar to gluten-containing cookies, so we took it away. After 5 minutes, his stomach started hurting, he was coughing, and he was having difficulty breathing. We had to rush to the hospital because his throat was closing up.
It's a mistake that can't be allowed because it's putting people's health at risk. If the ice cream shop offers gluten-free ice cream, they must follow the protocol perfectly and have fully trained staff. There may be people who can be harmed by ingestion, but there are others where it's a matter of life.
For our part, we won't trust these ice cream shops again because this is the second time something similar has happened to us, and it's now clear to us that they don't know how to properly manage what it means to offer gluten-free options.
