My wife has a serious wheat allergy. On our recent trip, my wife ordered the chimichurri steak, which was marked as gluten free on the menu. Our server also confirmed it was gluten free. We also watched as he put a note about the wheat allergy into the system, so that the kitchen was aware and could make sure there were no issues with cross-contamination. About halfway through dinner my wife found a whole elbow macaroni noodle in her meal, hidden within the steak and sauteed veggies. She then realized she was very itchy and was having tight breathing which is the start of an allergic reaction from having consumed wheat. We had to quickly leave in case the reaction got worse. Luckily the medication she took was effective in time, and we avoided a trip to the ER. She spent the next day recovering from the incident. Of the dozens of restaurants we have eaten at, this is the only one we’ve ever had a wheat reaction from. Do not eat here if you have food allergies. We will not be coming back to Highland House.
