House of Umami Ramen

The food was really good, and the waitress was nice but the service really could have been better in a few important ways. I let the waitress know right away that I cannot have gluten and she showed me what I could have on the menu. However, at a certain point, my kids told me that “molten eggs“ are eggs that have been soft boiled, and then marinated. My gluten-free food had “molten” eggs and bamboo shoots. After I had already gotten my food, I asked the waitress if she could find out whether the eggs and bamboo shoots were marinated in something that contained gluten. She never came back, and I took a few bites of the egg and bamboo shoot and they were delicious, but I mostly avoided them in fear of spending a day or two with severe abdominal pain. The waitress never got back to me on whether the eggs and bamboo shoots were safe for me to eat, but when we were almost done with our food, a manager came out and he was really falling all over himself to make sure we were happy. He did not mention the gluten issue, but then I brought it up and he passively admitted they had made a mistake. It was really a bizarre way to handle things. He said something about “let us know if you get sick and we’ll take care of you.“ I don’t know what that’s supposed to mean. What are you going to do about it? As we told him, we live 3 1/2 hours away from the restaurant. We were in Lansing doing things and drove a half hour out of town because this was the restaurant my son chose for his birthday dinner. Sidenote, I did not have a reaction so maybe these items don’t actually contain any gluten or maybe I just ate a small enough amount not to react. Either way the restaurant should do an education for the kitchen and wait staff on food allergies. If you are someone who would be hospitalized from exposure to gluten, I would not eat here. Also, I had ordered hot tea immediately when we arrived, but someone had unplugged their hot water and then I think they forgot, I didn’t get the tea until at least a half hour later which meant I didn’t really have time to drink it because it came after our food was served. Then, my brother mentioned that two of our party were having their birthday that day and they were given free dessert, except they both ordered different flavors of the crêpe cake - one asked for brown sugar and the other asked for strawberry - and they both got mango. They said it was good and they weren’t upset, especially since it was free. But still. Then once we had finished eating, most of our party of six went out to the car, but a few of us used the bathroom briefly. Before we could leave the building, they had the entire dining room torn apart for deep cleaning despite the fact that they were not closing for another 20 minutes. It was awkward. all the food was really good with the exception of a mixed drink that was just OK.

Not only is the food fantastic, they have a lot of gluten free options and things you can substitute! Chloee was super knowledgeable, prompt and attentive. She had a great attitude and a lot of recommendations!

Deanna was exceptional! My wife has celiac and she took her order of poke, and returned sharing some other dishes that were gf my wife did not know about. My wife was so happy because most barely care enough to check all the potential food options when she asks, Deanna did this without her even mentioning anything. So great!
