I am from Miami, & not only were me & my family all loyal patrons, we took all out-of-towners and recommended Joe's often to tourists. I was horrified by my last visit, with calus reaction from management. I were going on out honeymoon overseas, and specifically stopped in Miami to take my husband to a few of my favorite places. My husband has Celiacs, which they seemed to understand, but 45 min after, he became very ill. Without getting detailed, it was an unmistakable gluten reaction. Still, these things happen in a busy kitchen where cross contamination can occur. We were up ALL NIGHT with him sick, & stopped by the restaurant the next day to let them know. They looked up our check/order but made it very clear their staff is trained to "handle" gluten sensitivities. They acted like we were trying to pull something- this was the most expensive meal of our trip, with 5 courses, jumbo claws, cocktails, and a nice wine. The didn't offer a gift certificate, partial refund, or even an apology. Perhaps we were TOO polite& understanding so they didn't take us seriously. I was SO offended- needless to say, never again. And if Joe's still owns all the stone crabbing boats, I never get them anywhere. I'll stick to lobster rather than support that corporation. I should have brought a doggy bag of the food my husband "returned"- maybe that would have convinced them.
