Have you ever had authentic Laotian cuisine? Me neither so I can’t really tell if it’s authentic or not, but something points to the latter and it doesn’t smell fishy. Granted, I dont have to go for AUTHENTIC everything, as long as it taste phenomenal.
We ordered the tapioca dumplings, Tom Yum, Massaman Curry, braised pork belly and the rice noodles. First thing we notice is that the portion size is smaller than expected (we have been warned tho), but that is not the end of the world.
The rice noodles is flavourful and the texture is just the right amount of chewy. The pork belly is phenomenal in how it was braised so soft that it breaks apart the moment you bite on it, and the sauce is striking on the perfect balance of spice and pork umami that brings everything to the front. Tom Yum and Curry is just normal, nothing too special but worth a try.
Now I wanna especially talk about the tapioca dumplings, because it’s just confusing. We read from the menu that it was shiitake mushroom and all kinds of filling inside, and we were excited. When it was served, it was understood that we were suppose to wrap the dumplings in the lettuce with all the condiments and what not. Big mistake, dont do that. The crispiness of the lettuce confuse with the chewy and gluteny texture of the dumpling wrapping, and it just steals the show away, and the condiments that was in my mouth completely distract me from anything that is happening inside of the dumpling, which was supposed to be the star of the show. The dumplings could have been empty and I wouldn’t have noticed. To be fair, in my second try, when I bite into the dumplings, the filling was not very strong in flavour either so I really wasn’t quite sure if im tasting anything, but that was after I already had a few strong tasting things already.
I’ll have to admit, it’s a nice restaurant with nice decor, cool atmosphere and decent service, suited for a crowd to stay for a whole night. That is mainly why it’s a four star but not a three star restaurant. The food was decent, but I was expecting more, and it wasn’t really a top choice for me. I wouldn’t hate to come back but it wouldn’t be on top of mind.
