I went to Lark and Owl Booksellers for the first time yesterday. From the moment I walked in, something was...different. No one assaulted me with a forced, "Hello, and welcome to yada yada!" A couple of folks smiled at me, and I sought out one person to apologize to for needing to start with the restroom, but she just kindly pointed me the right way. This sounds silly but even the rr set the tone: community wipes, diapers, pads in case of emergency. A drop box for cash if you want to help fund those supplies. A free phone with community resource numbers. All gender bathrooms with changing stations. The cafe and decor is delightful. I had an iced Chai, and a chocolate cherry empanada. Kels had a gluten free cookie. The staff I asked a book-related question of was exceptionally knowledgeable and loved the kind of books I love! The women who own and run the store try to especially support female and local authors - so I gave them my card and said I'd be willing to do just about anything they needed, including writing workshops. I really felt at home, something I have sort of been waiting for here in good ole Georgetown, Texas.
