Mama Toucan's Natural Market

This was the best experience for groceries here in Costa Rica. I personally have many food restrictions due to allergies. This store had all dairy free, egg free , plant based, and gluten free you could find. I can finally breathe knowing I will eat this week during our vacation in your wonderful country.

edit : we have visited this shop countless times over the past year and used to love the (only) plant based sandwich called the Boston Garden.. and upon our third visit to CR, we were beyond disappointed to find about a tbsp of shredded carrot in between two soggy slices of bread, two lettuce leaves and no pesto, mushrooms and a yellow slice of tomato. We now avoid the deli altogether and try to limit our visits considering how insulted we were to be served such a pitiful sandwich. Tiny little shop that offers everything from fresh sandwiches to canadian maple syrup, to non toxic cosmetics, to organic local fruit and veg. The prices are quite steep considering that most specialty products such as Bobs Red Mill or gluten free pasta from Italy are imported from quite far, but it’s nice to have access to familiar items. The bagels and sourdough from the bakery next door are the best in the area and the house made chocolate chip cookies are insanely delicious. Oh and to make things even better, the shop is always clean and the staff are wonderful.
