After walking around Niagara Falls for hours, we were looking for a place to have a late dinner. It was almost 10PM. My daughter, who is tuning 12 today, has coeliac’s disease, meaning she cannot consume gluten. The sign outside the restaurant indicated they had gluten free options. I went inside to confirm. The waitress told me there were many gluten free options and that all burgers had a gluten free option. We sat down and my daughter ordered a children’s « Burger in Paradise ».
The meal was good and the burger was served with a gluten free bun.
Around 1 in the morning, my daughter who had been sleeping, began to vomit repeatedly as she always does when she accidentally consumes gluten. This is how she began her 12th birthday.
I believe the bun was indeed gluten free but something in the burger itself, the bun or the fries had been contaminated with gluten while it was being prepared. Cross contamination. Either the fries were made in oil that had fried gluten , the burger was prepared on a grill that had grilled bread and contaminated the meat, or one of the ingredients had gluten.
Restaurants that do not have the know-how and discipline required to offer real Gluten free food should not advertise it n their menu. Some people order Gluten free by choice. Other have a real allergy or coeliac’s disease and get sick when they consume gluten
