I had breakfast at Maywood Pancake House, and overall, it was a solid spot, but not without a few quirks. The place has a nice vibe—quiet enough for a good conversation—and the service was on point. The staff was super attentive, which I always appreciate.
I went with the gluten-free pancakes, and while I’ve had some pretty questionable GF pancakes before, these were actually decent. They had a slight natural sweetness, which was nice since I don’t use syrup. The texture threw me off a little—something about them made me wonder if they were actually gluten-free, but they tasted good, so I didn’t overthink it. They also asked if I wanted vegan butter, which I thought was nice.
I also tried the garden omelet, and it was fine. It was not dry, which was a plus, but it was also nothing exciting. The home fries were underwhelming—big cubes and wedges of potato, pretty basic, with no authentic seasoning or crispiness. They were just... there.
One thing that bugged me was that some of the “vegan” dishes mentioned cheese, but it didn’t say if it was actual dairy or a plant-based alternative. A little more clarity on that would’ve been helpful.
I’d give it a 3 out of 5, maybe closer to a 4. The food was right, the service was excellent, and the atmosphere was solid. Would I go out of my way to eat here again? Probably not. But if I was in the area and needed a decent breakfast, I wouldn’t mind stopping by for a bite and quality conversation with great company.
