I got a DoorDash to my office today from Millburn Deli and it was great. In New Jersey a sloppy Joe is a big sandwich - not the Italian past bolognese meat sauce sandwich I was raised on. That’s what I got on gluten free bread. It was good. Pickles were good. Iced tea? Also good.

My mouth is watering as I write this review!! Five of us went to the deli for lunch - two of us had never been before!! Unfortunately I have to be gluten free and my expectations were not very high!! Oh my gosh!! What an amazing experience!! I had a “Honey Honey Turkey” on gluten free bread and I can’t believe I ate the whole thing!! The staff has incredible memories - when you order five sandwiches and get every sandwich smack on, it is amazing!! I feel like the Terminator when I say “I’ll be back!!” Incredible!! 😋😋😋

Beware if you have a gluten allergy!! I have been going to the Millburn Deli for years. From high school throughout college and now as an adult, I look forward to going every chance I get. I come back to New Jersey once a year for Christmas and every time I land, I go to the deli and order my sandwich and never thought twice about having a gluten allergy, i always felt safe and welcome. This year I informed them of my gluten allergy, like i do every time. (they used to press it separately for me, and even back in the day they used to press it with the paper so i wouldn’t get sick). They went ahead and pressed the sandwich without cleaning the grill or any precaution. I told the lady at the register, she was kind and understanding, she explained in Millburn, people are usually just afraid of gluten. She grabbed a lady that was behind the counter where you order. The lady from behind the counter informed me “if i have a gluten allergy, i just shouldn't eat there at all” and that really was her only piece of advice. How disappointing. I ended up settling on a different sandwich after asking if a non-grilled sandwich would be safer and went on my way. Really let down by the whole experience, and I will be taking that lady’s advice, and not eating there ever again! It was a good decade of the deli otherwise, I will miss it but will not risk getting sick!
