PEOPLE WITH FOOD ALLERGIES BEWARE:
Very disappointing experience at Monument Cafe on 3/15. My husband and I went in for breakfast. My husband has a severe celiac allergy. We stated numerous times to our server that his allergy is serious and all of his food needs to be prepared gluten free, to which the server fully acknowledged and even talked in depth to us about the way the food would be handled and cooked. Our food was brought out and we trusted that the server made sure everything was gluten free. Well about 10 minutes after my husband started eating his meal, our server came over and said, “Sorry, your plate is not gluten free. I forgot to ring it in as gluten free.” BAFFLED. My husband and I shot each other looks of complete dread and worry. We literally stated to the server that he had a severe allergy and he ASSURED us it would be made gluten free. I am severely confused as to what happened from the time he took our order to the time he punched in the food. Did he have a brief bout of amnesia? The negligence and incompetency was shocking. The server apologized, but the damage was done. He did not charge us for his meal, but he did charge me for my meal and our son’s mickey pancake. Honestly the whole experience ruined our weekend. People with severe celiac’s disease are usually bed ridden for days. My husband will spend the next 3-4 days in severe pain and completely out of commission due to this waiter’s carelessness. I understand Monument Cafe prides themselves on being efficient and turning around tables quickly, however, it is clearly costing them business as the servers are, I guess, too distracted to take allergies seriously. This is the same situation as if a child who had a nut allergy was served nuts. The manager on duty was apologetic but I do not believe they understand the consequences of their mistake. We won’t be back. At all.
