As someone who lives in NYC, I’m always looking for restaurants with both great ambiance and great food - and that’s not always easy to find on Long Island. But Okaru in Roslyn completely exceeded expectations.
The service was incredible. Our server was kind, attentive, and truly wanted to make sure we had a great experience. As someone with celiac, I was also so impressed by how seriously they took my gluten allergy - most of the menu could be made gluten-free, and I felt totally safe and taken care of.
We started with the warm Japanese mushroom salad - such a good way to kick things off. The spicy yellowtail sashimi was amazing (next time I’m getting the king salmon), and the crab crispy rice, salmon tobanyaki, and mushroom gohan rice were all so flavorful and satisfying. Sushi was super fresh too - great fish quality.
The biggest surprise was dessert: the summer berries kakigori. I didn’t expect much from something described as shaved ice, but it was infused with grapefruit?, yuzu, and berries and ended up being the table favorite - even over the chocolate dessert.
Whether you're gluten-free or not, Okaru is a total standout - delicious food, great vibe, and an experience worth repeating.
