We visited this fish and chip shop 10 days ago and specifically ordered gluten free options for my son, who is a diagnosed coeliac. We paid extra for both gluten free batter and chips and were assured that everything was cooked in separate fryers to avoid cross-contamination.
Unfortunately, this was not the case. My son had a violent reaction to the food, indicating that it must have been contaminated with gluten. He was extremely unwell - unable to eat for five days and bedridden for seven.
I called the store to confirm their process, and they reiterated that separate fryers are used. However, based on our experience, I would strongly caution anyone with coeliac disease or gluten intolerance. Our experience suggests the risk of contamination is very real, and it had serious consequences for my son's health.
This was incredibly disappointing and distressing. I hope the business takes this feedback seriously and reviews their food handling practices.
