The staff were friendly, especially to my child, which was lovely, but overall the experience was poor.
I emailed the head office of this company privately to offer my feedback and give them a chance to make it right and waited a good amount of time to hear back, but they have ignored me, so I am posting about it publicly instead.
I entered the venue around 5 pm on 8 September 2024 and asked if they had any gluten-free options. The staff seemed friendly and accommodating and provided me with an allergen menu.
I debated the options and ordered a salmon and avocado bowl, and then looked at the sauces and commented that I was excited to see that the teriyaki sauce was listed as being gluten free, because it often isn't.
The member of staff picked up the bottle of teriyaki sauce and tipped some on to my food before commenting that actually, sometimes the teriyaki sauce is not gluten free, because it depends on the supplier, and asked if I wanted to risk it and I said no, eating the things I'm allergic to causes me intense pain. In this case, intense pain would have been dangerous for me and my child as I had driven to London and needed to drive at least an hour and a half, if not longer, to get home. Anyway, I expected that I'd be given a new bowl of food, as there was now teriyaki sauce, which might have gluten in it, all over it, but they just squirted some other sauce on top and rung me up.
As they were doing so, they were really kind and polite and friendly to my child and I felt awkward asking directly for new food, so I just paid for my meal, and went out to the tables outaide. I thought I could maybe eat around the teriyaki bit but there were only a few mouthfuls not touching the sauce because it had spread throughout the bowl.
I went back into the shop and said that the teriyaki sauce was all over the food and that I could not eat my meal. They claimed not to have out any teriyaki sauce on my meal at all. I told them that I had literally seen them sqyirt it on there and they replied that maybe some came out when they had tipped the bottle upside down over the food but said they definitely didn't squirt it and so I said "okay, whatever" and I put the food in the bin.
No one ever offered to make it right and I went home hungry, having spent what I thought was £11.45 on food I could not eat, plus another £2 for some water for my child (she thankfully had food from elsewhere, as she is also gluten free).
Later that week, I checked my bank statement, and I found that I've actually been charged £11.45 twice, so that's £22.90 on food I was not able to eat.
Food allergies are not a joke or a preference. If I eat the allergens I am sensitive to, I am in excruciating pain for up to 12 hours and have lasting effects after that for weeks.
I clearly communicated that I was avoiding a certain allergen and asled for information to help me do so. I even explained how bad I feel when I eat the allergens in question, because the person at the till asked me what happens if I eat it.
Also, charging someone twice is not okay at all. I would urge other customers to check if they have been charged twice.
