Long text, but I hope it's useful to you. I'm celiac and I'm sharing my experience tonight at L'Assorti restaurant on Racine Street in Chicoutimi. I mentioned in my online reservation that I have celiac disease, which I always find better. I was surprised by the number of gluten-free options on the menu, both for starters and main courses. I mentioned again that I'm celiac, and my waitress reassured me by saying that she had seen the bill and was well aware of the risks associated with contamination and using the fryer. She also told me that the fries are listed as gluten-free on the menu but are not safe for a celiac like me. That being said, I chose the duck breast plate with the extra two pan-fried jumbo shrimp with candied garlic. For dessert, I had the dark chocolate mousse with honey whipped cream. My partner kindly decided to have the gluten-free grilled game tartare as a starter (with croutons on the side, and they brought me sweet potato crackers for the gluten-free crowd) so I could share a few bites with him. He also had the salmon tartare as his main course. Ye, adorable, I know! 😜 Be vigilant, my gluten-free friends. Be paranoid even! It will save you a lot of trouble. Like it did for me tonight. My plate arrives, first thing I notice... there's a triangle of what looks like a fried tortilla stuck in my sweet potato mash... what a crime. I look at my partner, he says, don't touch that! We'll ask first! The waitress arrives and says, no, no, don't touch that... It's fried in oil and it's not gluten-free. 😒🙄🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Why does this happen to me all the time? She said: "Feel free, I can send the plate back to the kitchen, or you can remove the potatoes, I'll replace your utensils, and I'll bring you more sweet potato puree." It had already taken a while because of the cooking of my duck breast, so I took the risk of only removing the potatoes, hoping that the unidentified thing hadn't crumbled elsewhere on my plate. - I tasted my husband's tartare: delicious! - I devoured my duck plate! Perfectly cooked, melting in the mouth... wow! But my biggest favorite was the foie gras sauce. My god! I would have licked the plate if it had been acceptable! The harmony of flavors was perfect. A generous portion of seasonal vegetables. Everything was balanced. - The jumbo shrimp were good, nothing special, a little overcooked, but their candied garlic butter was incredibly delicate. - The dark chocolate mousse was good, very smooth and silky. I really liked the honey whipped cream, which paired perfectly with the chocolate mousse while remaining very distinct on the palate. It had a lovely subtlety. Only the price left a bitter taste in my mouth ($11), but when I go to a restaurant with the intention of writing a review, I always order from the appetizer to the dessert. I could have done without it. All in all, did the small mistake (which could have been a big one!) prevent me from enjoying my meal? No. But I can't stress this enough: don't be afraid to ask questions if you have any doubts. Be on the lookout for anything that seems dangerous, and don't automatically assume you're safe just because there's a gluten-free label on the menu. In short, the portions are generous and the prices are within the norm for this type of cuisine. My duck breast plate retailed for $45, I think. I'll definitely be back. The service was impeccable and attentive. Everything was delicious. We don't have many safe options in Saguenay, so I recommend this restaurant, L'Assorti. Enjoy your meal!
