I live in the neighborhood and have been coming here for 12+ years. I recommend coming in later on a week night if you'd like to avoid the lines The food is consistently high quality and the staff is always pleasant, helpful and even a bit fun, showing they enjoy working there. Recently I came with my partner and sat at the bar. I'd recently been told by a medical provider that I need to be better about stepping away from the gluten. :( The bartender overheard my plight as I discussed what I could eat with my partner. She informed me that the Fried Chicken, the Catfish and the Fried Okra are all made with a gluten free batter. It was a relief to have the fried chicken strips with my screen door plate. I've always loved the screen door plate, because they do a beautiful job of seasonal vegetable sides, so you can combine 3 off of the regular or seasonal sides menu.
If you need to ask more detailed questions about food allergies, like if it's fried in the same oil as batters that do have gluten, I'm certain the staff will be just as helpful to you.
