Shoal

While in Winchester to find lunch my husband, 24 year old step son and I found Shoal online. I am coeliac, so we needed somewhere that could provide gluten free food. There was a special on the menu, which the waitress kindly pointed out to us, of fish, chips (unlimited!) and peas, bread and butter and a hot or cold drink included in the price for £19. My husband and I opted for a pot of tea - each and they were huge. Terrific value already, but there was more. There were lots of gluten free options and sides. Two of us chose mushy peas and one minted peas. Everything tasted amazing, including the gluten free fish. There was also a gluten free bread roll for me. There was plenty of butter for our rolls, slightly softened so we could spread it on the lovely fresh rolls. The waitress suggested bringing the first pot of tea at the start of the meal, and the second part way through so it was still hot, which was thoughtful. I've never been anywhere with such great attention to detail in their service. Additionally at the start of the meal we were offered a jug of water. We had both still and sparkling water and there was no drama. Even the peas and the tartare sauce were really tasty. The waitress brought a bottle of gluten free vinegar for me too. Portions were very generous but part way through the meal the waitress reminded us we could have more chips if we wanted! As good as they were, we were too full for more. That was a pity because the desserts looked great too. Fabulous food, even better service. It's by a mile my best fish and chip restaurant experience ever. If you like fish and chips and you're in the area you must try it.

Ate in. Beautifully cooked fish and chips, with mushy peas. Efficient staff who looked after us very well, very cheerful. Gluten free options, including vinegar!

GLUTEN FREE This chip shop does excellent gluten free and a really good value for money, they also know what they are talking about which makes me feel safe buying for my wife who is coeliac.
