We just returned home from our meal at Spinners. I do not typically write bad reviews. If I have a bad experience, I tend to simply never return to the establishment. This time I am writing a bad review because I am presently experiencing my spouse, who is a celiac, violently ill in the bathroom after eating at this restaurant. He had the 'catch of the day' red snapper meal and we shared the 'flourless chocolate torte' for dessert. Both were confirmed as gluten free by the server. My spouse started to feel slightly off after the main meal, so we suspect it was the fish and not the dessert. He had red snapper and vegetables. There was a coating on the fish. It must have had gluten in it because he is having a severe reaction right now. He was throwing up in the bushes on our walk home from the restaurant and continuing to do so in the bathroom. Our first clue that this restaurant was not celiac safe: our server seemed confused when my spouse said he was celiac....so we clarified to her that he requires gluten free. When he ordered his meal she said the 'rice is not gluten-free'. Rice is naturally gluten free, so this perplexed us. To be extra cautious (even though we know rice is gluten-free generally), my spouse requested steamed vegetables in lieu of the rice. I had the rice, and I am sure it was just rice. So clearly the server was focussing on the wrong thing - it was the coating on the fish, and not the rice that was the issue.
Unfortunately "gluten-free" has become a health fad and I suspect many people are requesting gluten free, or asking for 'grain-free' or 'carb-free'.....because of life choices which is likely not helping things (and perhaps confusing servers and restaurant staff?). In my spouse's case, it is a medically-diagnosed auto-immune condition. The fact that he has ingested gluten tonight will not only affect him violently immediately after his meal, but he will feel unwell for the next few days. Message to the restaurant: please, please take your customers who state they are celiac absolutely seriously. Unfortunately, while your ambience is lovely, we will never be back.
