If you have celiac disease or a serious gluten intolerance, please read this before eating here. The restaurant advertises that most of their dishes can be made gluten free and safe for celiacs, and they even offer a gluten free roti. However, we were really alarmed to learn that almost all of their dishes use hing (asafoetida), and the brand they use contains wheat fillers. That means the food is not truly gluten free or safe for celiacs, despite what they claim. We had called ahead and were reassured that they could accommodate celiac safely, so we went in and asked again about their food safety protocols, cross-contamination, and how they handle celiac in general. They repeatedly assured us that they take it seriously and do everything they can. We were just about to place our order based on that. By chance, we decided to dig a bit deeper and specifically asked about the hing and requested to see the packaging — that’s when we discovered it contained wheat, and that roughly 98% of their dishes include hing, even the biryani. Many traditional biryanis do not use hing at all, so this was surprising. If we hadn’t asked, we would have eaten there believing everything was safe. When we explained to the manager that you cannot tell people something is gluten free while using a spice that contains wheat, she did not seem particularly concerned. That was incredibly disappointing and honestly worrying from a health and safety standpoint. To be fair, our server was lovely — she took our concerns seriously, checked with the kitchen, and involved the manager when she wasn’t sure. She was the bright spot in an otherwise stressful visit. If you’re running a restaurant and claim you can accommodate dietary needs, especially something as serious as celiac disease, you need to do it properly — down to every single ingredient — or be honest that you can’t. Otherwise, it feels like false advertising and puts people’s health at risk. Either source a certified gluten free hing if you insist on using it, or prepare traditional versions of dishes without hing. Until then, anyone with celiac disease or strict gluten sensitivity should be extremely careful about eating here.

I am so happy that I finally went into this wonderful establishment! I have ordered in from a dining app and while it was still delicious, you need to dine in for the whole experience. My bestie flew in for a visit from Edmonton and we decided to go to Tasty Indian Bistro for supper on Saturday night. The moment you walk in, you are hit with the most tantalizing aromas, our mouths were watering. The service was exceptional as well, our server was so helpful in dealing with my gluten allergy. When our food came, I was blown away by the all the flavors! I couldn't stop eating, every bite transported you away to a different world. Tasty Indian Bistro is definitely my new favorite and I doubt that I will go anywhere else for supper. My bestie and her husband are planning to fly back in, just to eat here again.
