I went to Thai Smile with a group. I specifically asked for something with vegetables, fried tofu, and rice noodles (because I'm gluten free), that is also vegetarian. The waitress suggested the pad thai so I ordered that. Before I left the restaurant my voice was already getting raspy and my throat was swelling. I called the restaurant and they said they used the same seafood sauce in regular Pad Thai and vegetarian Pad thai. It is made with anchovies.
I don't know why they list anything with fish sauce as being vegetarian because it's not! I am allergic to most seafood and fish, and if I would have realized that it had fish sauce, it would have saved me from an allergic reaction.
Update: I spoke with four people in the restaurant and the last one finally told me that yes, the fish sauce whether you order it vegetarian or regular has anchovies in it. A response from Andrew S. said they're confused because I said I wanted vegetarian but I did not specify it was because I had allergic reactions. I have been vegetarian for 55 years, and I've always ordered vegetarian and never had a reaction because a vegetarian diet does not have fish or animals and it. Seafood and shellfish are on my allergy list, but since I have been vegetarian for so long, I have no idea what my reaction to them would be because i don't eat it. Andrew telling me I need to specify that I am vegetarian and am allergic to seafood is like ordering a vanilla milkshake and telling them I'm allergic to peanuts. Nobody would put peanuts in a vanilla milkshake so it's not necessary. No one else has given me seafood when I order vegetarian and this is the first time I had eaten at this restaurant, so there is no way I would know that their concept of vegetarian is different than the rest of the restaurants I have eaten at.
