I was looking for somewhere close to the Barbican as we were attending a show there and didn’t want to drive home in potentially poor weather in December. I knew the Rose and Crown was close and had a quick look at reviews; I was won over very quickly by glowing reviews of both the accommodation and the food. I loved everything about the Rose and Crown - big room with a spacious en-suite, lovely fluffy towels, lots of easily accessible sockets, ample tea and coffee supplies and a very comfortable bed. The food was delicious with gluten free and vegan options. I had a difficult time deciding what to eat; I opted for a cheeseburger with gluten free bread, but the leek and celeriac pie with a jug of cheese sauce was very tempting. The burger came with the Rose and Crown signature chips ( the size of fishfingers!) Breakfast was also delicious and included in the price of the night’s stay. There was a good selection of cereals, fruit and yoghurt in addition to the cooked options. Tea, coffee and 3 fruit juices were also available. I opted for a full English breakfast with gluten free toast; it was so big I couldn’t manage it all, orange juice and a pot of tea. The staff were all lovely; Christopher is a great host.

Lovely pub, great atmosphere, the food is delicious best we’ve ever had and better than anywhere we have eaten at home. Good choice of gluten free meals as it’s a pain for my husband to find somewhere that will cater for his coeliac. Will definitely be eating here again if we return to York on holiday. Great location only 2 mins drive from where we stayed and there is free parking around the rear of the building.
