The Cage in Huntingdon Valley

This place is awesome! Went for lunch on a Friday. Can't wait to go back again for Brunch or Happy Hour. So many great options on the menu for gluten free or low carb diets that this is the place to go with you big group of friends who all eat different. The food is so yummy, everyone at our table was happy. Definitely go!

I wanted to absolutely love this place. Let's start with the good - the cocktails and mocktails were delightful. I had the Lavender Lloyd and my partner had the Mandarine Mocktail. We had the Poke Tuna Tartare appetizer off the gluten free menu and that was fantastic. We ate it so fast I didn't get a picture. For dinner we had the Huli Huli BBQ Chicken and the Asian Salmon Salad. The cook on the chicken was perfect and the salad had good balance of flavors and was well dressed. The food was really really good. Now for the opportunities for improvement. At a place that has a separate gluten free menu amd marks menu items for shellfish and nut allergies, I fully expect them to be able to fairly easily accommodate something like a dairy allergy in at least 2 of their entrees. They weren't. When we flagged the dairy allergy when we ordered the appetizer, they told me my only entree option was a salad. If I wanted something different, they'd have to "see if there was anything they could do". I haven't been treated like this at a nice restaurant in decades.

Cool atmosphere. Good drinks. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE 🌱 🥑 VEGAN OPTIONS! Pretty much nothing to eat as a vegan, which is a real accomplishment when even truck stops sometimes have better options. The Cage embodies typical American cuisine (meat 🥩 and 🧀 cheese). They have a whole gluten free menu, so you’re good if that is your retriction. Not the case if you are vegan. As a vegetarian you could get the basil pesto nut free pesto, feta from fira, truffle fries and wally salad, as well as some pastas and pizzas. As a vegan you can really ONLY get the Wally salad sans cheese. You could modify a pizza to get no cheese, which is still probably not vegan due to the dough. No vegan burger, which pretty much everyone has. No tofu or meat alternatives for dishes, salads, etc. No pastas 🍝 that do not contain dairy, not even basic spaghetti and sauce. No vegan appetizers like simple chips and guacamole or pretzels, etc. Aside from their lack of vegan options the food is good, the atmosphere is cool, and our waitress was excellent.
