If you are looking for a Sunday lunch in a relaxing country pub which has great service, the Fox and Goose, Wyse's Rd, Chelmsford CM1 3SN is NOT FOR YOU!
On arrival be prepared to battle when trying to find a parking space, as its every man/woman for themselves. If there was designated parking for the disabled, good luck finding it!
My 93-year-old father struggled to walk with his stick and assistance over the granite chip carpark. 4 of our party were 10 minutes late to arrive, as they were stuck in the carpark queuing for a space.
On arrival at 12.30pm we were kept waiting at the reception desk for over 5 minutes before a member of staff acknowledged our presence and showed us to our table situated under the skylight. The seating was rickety old 30’s chairs which had seen better days and were exceedingly uncomfortable.
The atmosphere in the restaurant was anything but relaxing. The noise level from diners could be likened to a night club, and it was impossible to have a conversation without shouting!
After 30 minutes, all our guests received a drink, a further 30 minutes passed before 2 starters were served, and our main courses arrived an hour later. Clearly the waiting staff were thin on the ground and overstretched. We had to prompt staff for the arrival of our main course, to clear our plates, to order coffee, dessert and the bill, which to add insult to injury, included a service charge, as our party came under the 6 or more clause.
I was drawn to the Fox and Goose menu as it offered a good range of Gluten Free Food. When our food arrived the chicken was tough, GF Yorkshire pudding had come from a freezer and was stone cold in the middle, the roast potatoes were inedible, hard and difficult to cut, as was the pink lamb, with cutlery which wasn’t fit for purpose, and when the lamb sauce arrived, it was in a container the size of a thimble.
On a positive, the vegetables were steaming hot, the puddings were tasty and of ample size, and the toilet facilities were good.
