I met a friend for dinner at The Ram (a place I checked out online before going to Newark for the first time).
I have Coeliacs disease and have intolerances to dairy, eggs, nuts too. It makes it hard to eat out because there are allergens I can't have in a range of traditionally gluten free dishes.
The Ram promised a good range of NGCI (non-gluten containing Items) however they give warnings that there is potential cross contamination as it is an open kitchen. I decided to risk it.
I checked the manual for allergens and discovered that the chips were cooked in the same oil as other glutenous containing foods and so should have had a gluten warning in the book but it didn't. The server made sure I was aware before I ordered though. Sadly it just wasn't in their paperwork.
I discussed with the waiter what I could have and how I could alter my meal without causing issues for both parties (for them to cook or me to eat) and they were very considerate, helpful and understanding. Which I was grateful for. Definitely discuss your meal with a server before placing your order though!
I ordered the steak (with no chips, no salad and no sauces) with added mushrooms, avocado and a rocket side which gave the plate a bit more colour. The meat was done as requested, it was tasty and filling. It might seem plain but overall it was good food I enjoyed, that they were kind enough to cook for me with adaptions!
My friend had the fish and chips and it was huge! It wasn't too big as it was all gone by the end of the meal!
We had drinks. I got a Sangria Mocktail as well as tea. where my friend has a glass of red wine and later had some gin and tonic.
It was a great meal made better by great company, a friendly staff and decent environment. The differently sectioned off areas made some areas more private and intimate than others. The music was a tough too loud for good conversation, but not loud enough to stop conversation entirely.
I would eat there again because of the friendly staff, alone! They regularly checked we were okay and had drinks and anything else we needed and their willingness and enthusiasm to help alay some fears, made it really easy and relaxing. The food was tasty the beverages good, the atmosphere relaxed. I enjoyed my evening! Thanks The Rams staff for such a lovely experience!
