A Spellbinding Culinary Journey at THEWITCHEZ
Two weeks ago, embracing the glorious arrival of summer, our day trip to East Sussex led us to the vibrant seaside charm of Brighton. As hunger set in, we found ourselves wandering the beautiful labyrinthine alleys of the old town, where a magnificent little gem named THEWITCHEZ caught our eye. Arriving a touch early before their 4 PM opening, we were soon warmly welcomed upstairs.
The first impression was utterly enchanting. The interior of THEWITCHEZ is a whimsical wonderland, filled with eccentric designs, mysterious faces, and intriguing artwork. Every corner tells a story, offering endless visual delights that could easily occupy you for hours.
Yet, as captivating as the decor is, the true magic lies in the kitchen. The food at THEWITCHEZ is not just delicious; it's a testament to fresh, local ingredients and heartfelt preparation. As a food critic, I'm often on the lookout for inclusivity, and THEWITCHEZ truly excels here. Both of my companions are gluten intolerant, and they were thrilled by the extensive gluten-free options available. What's more, the execution and flavour of these dishes were so exceptional, they rivalled, and in some cases even surpassed, the non-gluten-free offerings.
Our culinary journey began with exquisite starters:
* Summer Breeze: A delightful combination of warm pear with goat's cheese, rocket, dates, walnuts, all brought together with a delicate honey mustard sauce and balsamic honey glaze.
* Mediterranean Coast: A vibrant plate of marinated olives and sun-dried tomatoes, served alongside chargrilled artichokes in olive oil, warm pitta bread, and creamy hummus.
For our main courses, we indulged in:
* Rösti: A comforting, traditional Swiss dish featuring perfectly pan-fried shredded potatoes crowned with cheese and a fried egg.
* Bavarian Schnitzel: A perfectly cooked chicken schnitzel, served with a choice of mash or chips, Parmesan cheese, a lemon wedge, and a crisp continental salad.
* Lamblicious Steak: Tender lamb marinated in fresh rosemary, thyme, mint, and garlic, pan-fried to perfection and accompanied by colourful peppers and a refreshing lemon & coriander couscous (with mash or chips as alternative options).
The passion of Ewelina and Zaneta, the owner and chef respectively, shines through every plate. Their commitment to using fresh, local ingredients creates a comforting, home-cooked feel – like enjoying treasured family recipes in your own dining room.
A special mention must go to the staff; they were sweet, kind, and incredibly attentive, adding to the overall wonderful experience.
I simply cannot recommend THEWITCHEZ enough. It's a place where whimsical charm meets serious culinary talent. Just be sure to book your table in advance to avoid disappointment!
