Toloache is not only a very cool name and throwback to Indigenous medicine and power plants. Toloache is also an authentic Mexican restaurant, referencing dishes from as far south as Oaxaca and as far north as the Sierra Madre (but not north of there, where wheat becomes the dominant base due to Anglo influence). Gluten-free options are easy, vegetarian as well, and they're always accommodating of needs. Just make sure to ask for corn and not the default flour tortillas wben included. They have a very spicy habanero salsa upon request. This location is far more romantic and cozy than their midtown/Kip's Bay location—in addition to a quiet and private outdoor patio. I (loyal guest, Verenice C.) eat here every time I'm in NYC, no matter what.

Absolutely amazing, authentic Mexican food! We dined here for dinner - was able to get a reservation easily through OpenTable and walked right in. The service was great - attentive waitstaff and fast delivery of items. We started with the Atun ceviche (absolutely delicious combination of watermelon and fish), ordered two drinks (I suggest the sangria!) and an order of the Chapulines grasshopper tacos. Now I'm sure it's a bit of a shock value entry on the list but it's well-made and surprisingly, incredibly delicious. I liked the combination of crunchy grasshopper, creamy avocado and zesty lime so much I ended up ordering another round! Our entree was the Carnitas, a well-cooked dish with some delicious carrot and potato sides. One other perk - they clearly label their gluten-free items which is a godsend! Amazing place, will be dining here again I'm sure!
