Our family recently stayed at the Van Der Valk Gilze Tilburg hotel, and we had a mixed experience. We traveled with our 11-year-old and found the room to be one of the most spacious and comfortable on our 10 day trip, with a cozy bed and a nice small balcony. Unfortunately, the balcony overlooked the bins, which wasn’t the best view, but it didn't detract from our enjoyment. The bed pillow though was incredibly lumpy, which made it difficult for me to get a good night’s sleep. To top it off, we discovered a boiled sweet stuck to the bedhead upon our arrival, which was quite off-putting.
A significant inconvenience during our stay was that the lift in the Royal Wing was out of order. This was particularly challenging since we had to manage our suitcases without any service. Despite assurances that it would be fixed on Monday, it was still not operational when we checked out on Tuesday. This issue really put a damper on our otherwise really pleasant experience, as we had to navigate steep stairs with heavy luggage, which was not ideal.
On a positive note, the hotel's restaurant was a highlight of our stay. They offered a variety of gluten-free options (glutenvrij) handled with care to avoid cross-contamination, which was reassuring for our family. The food was delicious, especially the gluten-free granola (Tlant) at breakfast. The hotel’s proximity to Efteling made it a convenient choice for our visit, and we enjoyed relaxing in the lovely bar and outdoor deck area. The staff in both the bar and restaurant were friendly and attentive, contributing to a generally enjoyable stay despite the few setbacks. If we'd had stayed longer I know we would have made use of the lovely onsite pool and the bowling alley. It's a really lovely hotel which with a bit more attention to maintenance and housekeeping could have been excellent.
