Viva has always been one of my go-to spots in Olathe for Mexican food with a fun, modern twist. I love the bold decor the murals, plants, and lively vibe make it stand out from other restaurants in town. The menu is creative, with favorites like pineapple fajitas, carne asada, and quesabirria tacos, plus plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. Their frozen drink flights and extensive tequila list are always a hit when I want to treat myself.
That said, I’ve noticed that Viva seems to be slipping a bit lately. While the food has always been pretty good, my last visit left me a little disappointed. The flavors just weren’t as memorable as before, and some dishes felt a bit “middle of the road.” Service has been hit or miss on recent trips, too—sometimes it’s great, other times it’s slow and inattentive.
But the real dealbreaker last time was the live music. I usually enjoy a little entertainment with dinner, but the singer and music were so loud it was impossible to talk or even think! We ended up leaving early, which is a shame because Viva used to be a reliable choice for a fun night out.
Overall, I still think Viva Tacos & Tequila has a lot to offer, but lately it feels like the experience isn’t quite what it used to be. If you’re planning a visit, maybe check ahead to see if there’s a live performance—unless you’re really in the mood for a loud night out!

Creative presentation for well made food. Overall a good experience, and I'm likely to go back. Why knock back a star? It's from the perspective of getting a gluten free meal, which with Mexican food tends to be pretty straightforward. At Viva the leadership team has chosen not to offer formal GF guidance on their menu nor as a separate pamphlet. They choose to leave it up to each server. That creates risk (from unintentional incorrect answers) for the guest and is an extra time load on their servers, who clearly work hard already. Our server kindly made two round trips to the kitchen to answer questions that could have been answered on the menu or a cheap printed supplement.
Update: Months later and still no formal gluten free documentation or guidance. Which still slows down their cooks and wait staff and adds risk for anybody with an allergy. Great food, but not necessarily worth the extra time and risk. Especially when so many Mexican options exist in the area.
