Winchester Royal Hotel

Smart city centre hotel. In a very old building but has an annex which is modern. I stayed on business and room was an excellent price at £80 b&b. Rooms advertised for a lot more but sure mine was a more budget room without a view. That said it was well appointed, very clean, nice bedding and ok bed ( double). Usual tea & coffee facilities and bathroom accessories. Only observation on room was windows didn't shut properly, but that was a counterpoint to having windows that actually opened, a rarity nowadays. Hotel itself has a lovely garden which is linked to bar and restaurant area. I didn't eat in evening but it looked very pleasant for those enjoying a drink in late evening sunshine Pre dinner and meals look nice and fairly priced. Breakfast was the full spread, cooked English and variations, pastries, cereal, yoghurt plus drinks. Self serve but was all good,tasty and hot when you expected it to be. Asked for and got gluten free toast, the better kind ( GF users will know what I mean). Decaf coffee as well from clever coffee machine. Very friendly service, think hostess was Jane and she did a great job. Will look at a return visit under own steam with wife as they have some very nice looking rooms and it's an excellent place to stay in Winchester, really central. Recommend, especially at the price I was given.

Went for cream teas, and the gluten free cakes were, I'm advised, out of this world!
