Used to love eating here, especially as someone who cannot have gluten. They have a decent selection of gf products. Quality has gone down a lot. Took a few months off from eating here and tried it again. We found both of our dishes to be relatively flavorless. Wont spend my money here any longer.
A beautifully remodeled spot with a bright, contemporary vibe, perfect for a casual hangout with easy parking.

I hate to leave a tepid review for a Kalamazoo restaurant since it's not easy to survive in this city, however, we have not had the best experiences here. I have celiac disease, so oftentimes sushi is a good solution for me, but this restaurant does not have any allergy information on the menu. None of our servers were too concerned with helping me navigate the menu. In fact, after needing a few minutes to look at the menu, our most recent server returned and said "have you been able to make any decisions yet?" We were next to the only people in the restaurant, and closing time was not soon. You might want to train your servers to say something like "are there any questions I could answer or could I make a suggestion?" Also, the service was dreadfully slow. This experience is quite the opposite of traditional sushi where you might order a roll or two and then order another piece or two, because getting your food the first time takes at least an hour. On all three occasions eating at Maru, we were there for 2.5-3 hours... Waiting with dirty dishes, waiting for the check, etc. On all three occasions, no gluten-free tamari was delivered so I sat there waiting for quite a while while other people ate. I ordered a salad, and it was not delivered with the appetizers and I had to ask for it after my dinner was delivered. It was pretty diminutive for $8. Most recently, I ordered one glass of wine and was never offered another over the 3 hours we were there. Overall the food was okay, but the changes made to the rolls to make them gluten-free generally made them very bland, and in terms of a sushi restaurant, the amount of seafood in the dishes was quite small. My husband was searching for crab in the rangoon dip. I see a lot of your reviews say the same thing regarding service, and I think you probably need to bring in someone to do some training. Also, please let your hostesses know that you do in fact have car seat swings, my friend asked and your hostess said that no you didn't, but then we looked at them in the corner the whole time lol.
A unique dining spot with a twist for dish sharing, offering accommodating service and flavorful meals that are worth the wait.

Very good food. Good sized portions. Very accommodating. Our group had one person gluten free, some of us are vegan, and myself, must avoid certain foods due to a reflux disorder. They were very helpful in finding what we could eat and modifying dishes to make them fit. Very very good service. The dishes took a while to make, but so worth it for the flavor and the cooking style. It's one of those restaurants with the turn in the middle of the table for dish sharing. I would definitely return. They did recommend booking a reservation since our group was large in case the time got busy. It was not very busy at the time, but I'm happy we didn't have to worry about being seated. We had a few kids with us and they loved the food. Very happy to have gotten to go here. My spouse heard good things about it from his friends.
Fresh ingredients and a delicious poke remain, plus daily-made house tea and ramen options create a delightful new spot to explore.

I was nervous to see what was opening in place of the old restaurant here, but was happily surprised! Poke (my favorite) is still available and delicious, with fresh ingredients and good portions. Their house tea is made daily and I highly recommend the peach flavor. And I like that there is also ramen available.
I will say, I would love if there was a rice noodle option for gluten-free ramen! I would love buying that regularly if it was available here.
