After our 21st birthday activity was cancelled, on the Sunday morning, this wonderful pub and staff fit in a booking for a table of 10 for lunch. The weather was awful and the 1h 30 mins drive meant we were 20 mins late but they welcomed us and treated us brilliantly throughout. The food was delicious; we had mostly roast dinners, which included a veggie option and a gluten free option (even a gf Yorkshire pud.) We took a birthday cake which ALL the staff came out with and sang to the birthday boy. The locals amongst the party have found a gem of a pub and we loved it enough to travel the distance to sample more of the extensive South African specials and more ales & ciders on tap. Thank you to the Monkton Inn staff for your warm welcome.

We visited The Bear tonight with our dog, atmosphere was good and we were seated straight away. The staff were very friendly and efficient and the meals were nothing less than perfect. I have a gluten intolerance and my meal did not disappoint. We were staying at a local caravan park so as an added bonus got 10%off too.

Overall disappointed.. had to wait a long time between getting drinks and food arriving. One of the meals was asked to be served a certain way for medical reasons. Possibly didn't hear request properly.. but when changed to a piece of toast,, was forgotten and so cancelled order. Was going to stay for another drink and cake but as still hadn't got toast,,which shouldn't have been so difficult ! Didn't bother. Won't be returning.. also gluten free toast was a bit stale, considering they had said on a previous visit their gluten free was the best.
Staff who served us was polite . Unfortunately overall experience not enjoyable.
Very noisy,, maybe ambient music could help lower loudness

My wife needs her food to be gluten and dairy free. It was not a problem, the chef worked around it, so there was great choice. We both had great tasting pizzas and took some home in a doggy box. Everyone was so friendly. Hooked to the place now.
