Decided to take one of my best friends to St. Johnsbury for his birthday weekend-he showed me the town online and told me about Dog Mountain, so, of course I booked a 5 day trip to the historic VT town! Well, we both love breakfast. I always felt I could eat breakfast any time for any reason so whenever I go anywhere, my first search is “where to eat breakfast near me”. We tried another place the first day…but the second day we went to The Kitchen Counter. It was the best decision for breakfast and the first morning was all I needed to know that this little cafe would steal my pancake, egg and bacon filled heart! I ordered the eggs Benedict with tomato and spinach (I try the Eggs Benny at every breakfast place) and I was not disappointed. Coffee is self serve and free pours. If you sit on the stools at the counter, the servers and chefs are right in front of you serving and making your food while conversation fills the room. The busier it seems, the better this well-oiled machine runs. I decided I would return for the remainder of our trip.
The second day, I couldn’t decide if I wanted blueberry pancakes or the biscuits & gravy with eggs, so I got both and our hostess was full of smiles and a bubbly personality. I haven’t tasted a more satisfying sausage gravy than when I made it myself at home with my grandmothers recipe. It turns out Crystal, the chef, makes this homemade sausage gravy in-house and special for Sundays…I am SOOOO glad I got the opportunity to experience it! I would give The Kitchen Counter Cafe a 10 out of 5 if I could and I encourage you to walk in with a hungry belly because you are bound to be satisfied! They do have vegan and gluten free options.
Busy spot with a charming covered patio, a unique order-at-the-bar system, and deliciously flavorful, filling sandwiches that keep folks coming back.

Whirligig served up some good food on our afternoon visit!
We stopped by Whirligig for lunch while in town during our weekend in Vermont. Our visit was during a weekend afternoon and the establishment was busy.
The first thing we noticed about this menu is that it very much can cater to gluten sensitivities, as many of their options are available as gluten-free.
On our visit to Whirligig we ordered two sandwiches, the smoked chicken chipotle and the smoked pork chipotle, and a couple Ciders. Order and payment at Whirligig is taken at the bar and you take a number to your seat where the food is delivered to you once it's complete. There is some limited inside seating with a good number of tables outdoors under a covered patio.
Our food arrived after a 20 minute wait, which is a bit longer than what we are used to but we were conversing about our trip and we weren't bothered by the wait. Both the chicken chipotle and the pork chipotle sandwiches were absolutely delicious, packed with flavor, and very filling. I have to make a special shout-out to the bread, which was honestly in the conversation as some of the best bread I have ever had. This seems to have been a common theme with my bread experiences in Vermont, I would love to know your secret because the bakeries up there are doing something great!
Overall we enjoyed our experience at Whirligig and we would be happy to return here for another meal if we find ourselves back in the area!
Discover a cozy spot on the main street with a great selection of herbal remedies, kitchen essentials, and tasty grab-and-go options.

A great little store on the main drag. We went there to get a couple sandwiches and they were happy to make what we wanted. They have lots of over-the-counter and homeopathic and herbal medicines, as well as a supply of kitchen goods and groceries and a nice deli in the back. They happily made a gluten-free version of one of their menu sandwiches, the turkey and guacamole" California" sandwich. They also had gluten free brownies & cookies. We were able to pick sandwiches, chips, and cookies to go and find a park across the river and enjoy our lunch.
Expect a welcoming vibe with knowledgeable staff and a menu that's impressively detailed about various options.

My experience was very positive. The service was prompt, friendly and knowledgeable. I especially enjoyed the jalapeño poppers. The menu is wonderful and they describe gluten free and other allergens very well.
