My review is about their gluten free options. Cannot comment on their gluten filled options.
To sum it up, I am a late in life celiac sufferer. Went over 35 years enjoying gluten and all the wonders of eating it. Then suddenly, my body decides to flip the switch, and I cannot process gluten. I am asymptomatic, in that my body kind of shuts down if I ingest even the tiniest microscopic amount of gluten. That being said, I usually don’t even bother with fancy doughnut places like this because they usually don’t offer gluten free options. But I was on a day trip to Portland with the family, and my wife is always on the lookout for gluten free things for me, and this place is highly regarded. Plus, when we got to Portland, there was a huge long line around the corner. Kind of peaked my interest, especially considering I am also allergic to seafood, so I cannot even enjoy the other thing people enjoy in Portland, lobster.
So family enjoys their lobster lunch, and before we leave the area to move on to our next point of interest, I get in line to grab a few doughnuts. I mask up, given that it is a doughnut shop, and given I can be have a reaction from just even a speck of flour in the air, better to be safe than sorry. Line has shortened by this point, so the wait is not too bad, only a few minutes. I get up, order my doughnuts. A chocolate sea salt, a cinnamon sugar, a lemon, and a cherry. All gluten free. We get into our car and drive away.
Big caveat here I need to mention, given my allergy, we never have anything wheat based in the car to eat, due to my allergy. All snacking in the car is gluten free, to make sure I do not have any reactions while I am driving. When my family eats anything with gluten, they wash and sanitize their hands thoroughly afterwards, and if they get any on their clothing, they change. Yes, my reactions are that severe.
So I eat the first doughnut, no problem. We get to our next destination. Take photos so the tourist thing, blah blah. Get in the car, drive to next destination. I eat the second doughnut. Drive to next destination. Take photos, do the tourist thing, blah blah. You get the idea.
Around 4pm I eat the 3rd doughnut, the lemon gluten free. I am driving, on the highway, suddenly, I start to get that contaminated feeling. My stomach starts churning, I start getting horrible heartburn, can’t stop having gas being expelled from both ends, and my body starts to ache all over. I have to pull over to the side of the road, since there is no exit close or amenity area close by, and I have to expel everything from my stomach as fast as possible, in the hopes that I can avoid a full on gluten contamination sickness.
Thankfully I did avoid most of it, I am just suffering from body aches and mild brain fog right now.
Needless to say, contaminated gluten free food is why I am giving 1 star for the food. I would give negative stars if possible, because making customers sick is, well, never a good thing. However, service was great, employees were friendly, and everything else was fine.
Service here was amazing! This gluten free bakery has got to be one of the BEST things I have ever had before! The service here is very good and I must say they are really nice employees. I hope to come back to this place over the weekends and even tho it's expensive all it matters is that it's the best in town! Also, thank you for everything you guys do for the brunswick area teen center! I go to the teen center alot and I have some of the granola deserts and I LOVE them alot. I liked the two boston cream donuts and the smores bar I had this morning. Again thank you guys for everything and I can see this business being the best ones in town!
I have been going here since moving to Maine in 2020....not because I am medically gluten free....just because it is great stuff! I try to stop in just for a muffin but usually come away with a lot more! Lots of creative variety, side by side with the old standby--delicious blueberry muffin, in case you're not in the mood for the fun rotating unique flavors. I am not telling my favorites because I want some to be left when I get there! LOL
Nice staff, very talented baker who must work very hard!
As someone with celiac, I felt very taken care of at The Bakeshop! I was excited to see gf focaccia -- a rare treat -- and the cashier Corbin went out of his way to check which of the gf baked goods were oat-free for me. The portions are huge, which is also uncommon for gluten free food. If I lived nearby, I would go here all the time!
Outstanding cafe with amazing employees, a great place to hang out with friends, and excellent gluten free options (with allergy-aware staff). We really need more places like Aubrey’s in Southern Maine and the Seacoast.
My best friend got me a vegan/gluten free carrot cake cupcake. I was a bit skeptical of how this would taste and my husband said there was no way it would be good. WOW were we wrong!! It was amazing! We now can't stop talking about it and want to try everything else they offer. You can tell they really enjoy what they do!
I'm almost tempted to move to Maine so I can visit this amazing GF cafe more often! What a treasure! The cinnamon roll was incredible. The sausage roll... Amazing. I bought a whole loaf of GF sourdough bread for $13! My husband bought a couple more goodies for later. Oh, also, the Vietnamese coffee was perfection. The prices were incredibly good for such amazing gluten free goodies. DEFINITELY VISIT!!
As someone living gluten free, it's amazing to find a bakery like this nearby. I got a breakfast sandwich, a strawberry muffin, and a cinnamon bun...and all was spectacular. It's rare to be able to indulge in this range of high quality baked goods. Great if you're gluten free...but also just great stuff - check it out!
P.S. there are some photos from Baristas and Bites, this team's Portland location, which they relocated to Cape as b+b Bakery a few years ago. Don't be confused if it looks different in its current location in Cape Elizabeth.
Great selection of sandwiches, soups, salads, all-day breakfast, and pastries. They have gluten free bread. Serving sizes are generous. Easy street parking in front. Clean and tidy dining area. Staff is very friendly and helpful.
Sandwich was good but they put all the meat in a big mound in the center so the edges were just bread. Their bagels aren't good- too bready, not enough gluten. They are not chewy like real bagels. They're only popular because Bangorians have never had a real bagel. Atmosphere is chaotic and hectic, all the hard surfaces make it very echoey and hard to hold a conversation. They replaced all the wood floors with cheap looking laminate. The plastic silverware is so flimsy, my spoon was bending trying to eat the potato salad. Staff were very friendly.
There was a wide selection of pastries available, but I think they must be brought in to the store instead of being made in house. We asked several times about whoopie pies. The first time, the woman said she didn't have any. My mother in-law then noticed two whoopie pies in a case, and the woman said...those are gluten free. When I asked when she would have whoopie pies, she replied, "I have no idea." This makes me think they don't make items in the bakery. The food was not good. It looked beautiful, but it was not delicious. The woman helping us was not friendly. I wouldn't say she was rude, but she was not friendly. She was kind to several regular customers, but seemed annoyed with us. I would not recommend trying this place.
They had gluten free waffle cones! And vegan ice cream. It’s been a while since my wife could have chocolate ice cream in a waffle cones and she says it was delicious. I got the dulce de leche (not dairy free) and it was really good!
An amazing cafe in Southwest Harbor. Prices are very affordable and a large range of selections for those on a vegetarian/vegan diet or looking for gluten conscious options. Had their vegan breakfast sandwich (vegan egg, vegan cream cheese, on an everything bagel). It was delicious!
I feel this is a special place!! The donuts are amazing and the atmosphere is so inviting. I wish I lived closer as their gluten free donuts are outstanding for someone with celiac. Highly recommend them. Once you eat one you will want more!!’n
My husband and I stopped in for coffee and was so happy to see the gluten free vegan options! We tried the scones, the muffins, and a breakfast sandwich and all were amazing!
The food and coffee are delicious. Prices are great. Gluten free friendly, vegan and vegetarian friendly. Only taking a point off for no high chairs. I think we'd come a few times a week if they had them
My favorite coffee shop...the best coffee roasted by the owner so it's ridiculously fresh. Great atmosphere and great eats ...everything is gluten free!
I have been going to this place for years. My nephew worked here years ago. I had nothing but good things to say. However, I drove an hour to get a cake for my daughter's birthday. I was in line 10 minutes, (no problem). I veered to the left for the desserts behind a few people and was called at from the sandwich line. I said I was interested in desserts. I also need some gluten free and needed to see what they had. I was told if I got out of line I'd need to go to the back. How was I suppose to look at the desserts in the sandwich line? I ended up leaving since I obviously wasn't getting help from the guy in the sandwich/salad line. Drove an hour home very disappointed.
I am so happy to have this delightful deli here in my town.
The sandwiches are bountiful and creative. Being Celiac, I was happy to see gluten free options.
I am so disappointed in the treatment of locals from this place. I went in the morning before my shift at a restaurant two doors down the street. I asked for just one scrambled egg because I am gluten intolerant, and was met with a nasty attitude and a horrifying price of $9 plus tax for One. Singular. Egg. As someone in the local food service industry who has known the owner for a long time, I am disgusted with the lack of concern for not only my food sensitivities but the fact that getting a side singular egg costs more than I what I would pay for TWO ENTIRE CARTONS of eggs. Treat locals better! Lost my business permanently. If the employees are coming down the street to our restaurant to eat during their lunch breaks, there is something wrong!!!!!
best brunch i’ve had in a while. full house but we managed to squeeze in a table for two upstairs by a window. cute, cozy atmosphere tied together by hand-painted table tops. mimosas were delicious, especially pear cranberry which i’ve never encountered before. “brunch bread” was the perfect start to the meal—we got a cheddar biscuit and cinnamon brown sugar gluten-free bread, both very yummy. for entrees, we shared french toast and steak eggs benedict. would order both again in an instant. service was warm and friendly to boot. will be returning, hungry for more!!

Talula’s baked and decorated a fantastic (and beautiful) two-tier birthday cake for us called “Taste of Maine.” Everyone loved the delicious cake, and it was even gluten free. Talula’s takes excellent care of their customers.
The Breakfast sandwiches are fantastic. The English muffin had a little charred, crispy edges. The eggs are buttery soft. I also got the sausage which had a great texture and flavor. My girlfriend got the gluten free multigrain bread and it was grilled to perfection. Hers also had ham, the buttery soft eggs and cheese on it. Overall it was delicious!
Coolest kind of store, tons of gluten free options, lots of cheese and other freshly made foods, books, etc.

Unbelievable vegan frosting atop a gluten free cupcake!! Wonderful staff who are willing to accommodate any allergy issues you may have.
Stop by and/or pre-order cupcakes to make sure you get what you need.
Simply delicious.
Love the local hub! This is the type of place that community is all about. The food is real, locally sourced, and made with quality and care. I have dairy allergy and gluten intolerance and they take really great care to make sure my food is safe to eat. There are vegan options as dairy replacements and gf bread for me to enjoy a breakfast sandwich. It has a cute cozy artsy sitting area and a small shop set up area that as coolers with some cool health conscious drinks and local foods like dried local mushrooms and eggs. The staff has always been very kind and helpful when I ask disarray questions. It can get pretty busy at some times but that just speaks to how good and how loved this little community gem is.

We stopped by on a recent trip to Maine. I bought a variety of packages to bring home (TSA had a fit🤣) for Christmas gift and am so excited to share these wonderful scones here at home! They even have a gluten free package that you can add anything to (suggestions on the bag) to make as desired. Of course we bought some to eat that they had there which were wonderful! They have a great variety which I understand changes with the season. The owner was very sweet and I’m happy to hear they will be expanding soon.

I’ve lived in bowdoinham for 6 years and driven by hundreds of times. My wife and I wanted to grab a bite and I said hey, let’s try Annabella’s!
I had the steak and cheese special and my wife had the tarragon chicken salad on gluten free bread.
I have eaten a lot of steak and cheeses in my day (including Pats and Gino’s in Philly) and I gotta say, this was probably the best one I’ve ever had.
And the homemade bread it was on was flaky, buttery, and crunchy, so delicious it almost (almost) over powered the steak.
Our waitress was great and when she came to ask how I liked the sandwich she genuinely wanted to know. I got the vibe she may have been the owner but I’m not sure.
We will most definitely be going back and I will be hard pressed to drive by again without stopping in.
We don’t eat out much so thank you for making it well worth it!
Nice selection of different roasts for drip coffee. My husband said the popovers were delectable and they even had a gluten free blueberry crisp for me. The only negative was a lack of seating in the shop. We sat outside on a bench and walked around the wonderful bookstore next store while we sipped our drinks.
The food here was great! I and a family member got egg sandwiches.
The sourdough was some of the best bread I've ever had. Super puffy and wispy, while still holding together in a sandwich. 10/10 sandwich. Seriously amazing.
The other sandwich we got was an egg sandwich with gluten free bread. Unfortunately, the gluten free bread was quite dense and a bit undertoasted. But the stuff inside the sandwich was still pretty good. My family member ended up eating their gluten free sandwich with just one slice of that dense bread, instead of eating both.
The building has a public restroom, very clean.
The atmosphere was nice. A bunch of seating, and there were a lot of people inside eating and ordering. The eating area isn't a very large room, all the tables are pretty close to each other.
There were many options for food. Lots of different breads, danishes, and pastries, and some gluten free options too. And they had Maine Root soda products, which are always great.
Food came out quickly, and the staff were nice to talk with.
Went here after searching up gluten free breakfast options and can easily say it’s the best breakfast I’ve ever had!! I got the Union Jack sandwich (i think that’s the name) w gluten free bread and was in heaven!! The employees were amazing and the prices were reasonable. Food was hot, and took only 10-15 min to come out. They even gave my little pup a piece of bacon outside. 🥰🥰 Will be returning and recommending to others!
Our cake looked absolutely stunning! Prior to our wedding, we sent photos of what we were looking for and The Cupcakery perfected it. We love that they offered gluten- and lactose-free options. We selected a different flavor for each layer, which was well received. Our guests enjoyed it and went back for seconds because, in the end, every piece of cake was consumed. We can’t wait to have the top tier for our anniversary!
The best and most affordable bake shop! Everything here is absolute perfection, from the cakes to the loaves! We tried several options, including the danishes, cookies, macarons, pizza, and loaves. They were all very reasonably priced for small-batch baking- cookies were $1.95-2.50, and you can find loaves under $5. Gluten free options are available, as well as custom cakes!
It has been a while since I have been to this classic Old Port diner and man it’s nice to be back.
Marcy herself is gone (which some might feel is a good thing…), Mandy was friendly and wonderful to chat with between serving up orders. Not a place I was expecting to find a gluten-free option, but she was very pleased to make me a hot GF cinnamon roll (from BamBam Bakery!) with cream cheese frosting made fresh on the spot.
Will definitely be back and I look forward to bringing my kids.
