Spending a weekend in Campbell river and needed to find a good restaurant that also had gluten-free options. This was an unexpected gem with an unassuming shopfront on the highway, but once we went inside it was a warm and welcoming place with a lot of charm. The food was extremely fresh and lots of choice for our gluten-free companion - dishes that were naturally gluten-free and those that could be made gluten-free on request. Our server was very friendly and helpful and our food delicious - extremely large pizzas, so unless you are hungry, one will easily feed two people!
For a change, we can both get the cuisine of our choice without having to compromise. We had Asian: Stir Fry Vegetable with rice instead of egg noodles, and Western: BBQ Chicken Sandwich with house salad. They kept to their promise of local and fresh: the House Salad was very fresh, with different kinds of vegetables including purple cabbage, instead of the usual imported box of mixed organic greens. The stir fry was obviously made from scratch, with cauliflower, broccoli, bell peppers, jicama, siu-choy, snap peas, onions, and carrots. We liked it so much we cancelled our dinner reservation elsewhere and came back the next night. Although the stir fry was just as good, I regretted ordering the chicken wings as it was battered with gluten and gave me indigestion. The french fries from the fish and chips were not cut from real potato fries, nothing like New York fries.
Waited to be seated for a long time. Then stuffed 5 of us into a small booth. Threw menus down on the table and didn't return for a long time. Once the meals were brought out, my wife ordered a gluten-free bun on her burger (allergy) and received a regular bun. Family waited for me in the vehicle because it took so long to get the bill. It was not even busy in the restaurant. I'm not impressed with this location.
Today I had a gluten-friendly quesadilla. Not good. It was greasy, falling apart and missing ingredients. ( I ordered online) The key ingredient is CHEESE!! How can you leave it out?? It's what holds it together. Yikes. I've had a few gluten friendly burritos from this location and they were ok but not something I would order again from here. First time trying the gluten-friendly quesadilla. It was zero stars. I will not be returning. Absolute fail.
What an unexpected and lovely treat it was to find this shop! Had a beautiful latte and an amazing piece of cheesecake - REAL cheesecake! And it was gluten free! Hoping to stop by again next time I’m in Campbell River.
If you’re seeking authentic Indian cuisine in Campbell River, Royal Aroma stands out as a local gem.
Located at 969 Alder Street, this family-run bistro offers a refreshing departure from chain restaurants, delivering bold, flavorful dishes crafted with fresh ingredients.
The menu boasts a variety of options, including gluten-friendly curries, freshly baked tandoori breads, and aromatic rice creations. Signature dishes like butter chicken and lamb biryani have garnered praise for their rich flavors and generous portions.
While the food consistently impresses, some patrons have noted that customer service can be inconsistent, particularly during busy periods. However, the quality of the cuisine often compensates for these occasional lapses.
For those interested in takeout or delivery, Royal Aroma is available on platforms like DoorDash and Uber Eats, ensuring convenient access to their delectable offerings.
In summary, Royal Aroma offers a flavorful, authentic Indian dining experience in Campbell River. While there’s room for improvement in service, the exceptional food makes it a must-visit for local food enthusiasts.
It's great for a night out with live music, the shuffle board and pool table, but service isn't the greatest and there are no celiac-friendly options. When we asked the server what was gluten free she replied "you tell me". It was for a work function so we had a fee different things to consider.
I clarified my comment due to owners reply.
This is a fave place to order out from. Always good food and great staff. We eat here 3-5 times a month and best part is they have a wide range of Gluten Free options.
I felt the need to leave a review as the last ones were quite old. They have a new manager and a new chef in the past year and have been making great efforts in improving their service and staff knowledge. No dedicated GF fryer, but given the nature of the food being mostly Mexican inspired, there are quite a few items that can be modified to suit and the kitchen will make accommodations to avoid cross contamination. I love the fajitas and you can request corn tortillas instead of the flour ones. It’s one of the top 3 places in town I enjoy dining out that actually has some decent GF options!
