I have celiac and was able to safely eat a burger here. No dedicated fryer, but after two days in the Black Hills with very few options it was like finding a watering hole in the desert.
I have celiacs disease and I have never experienced a restaurant go so above and beyond regarding food safety. Flavor was not sacrificed when making changes for me either! Delicious 😋

Great service, great atmosphere, suprisingly met the owner also as she was just walking thru talking to customers. She introduced us to the restaurant mascot which happens to be an adorable huskie. I was impressed with how friendly the hostess was and everyone after also impressed
Our daughter has celiac and it can be a challenge when eating out. The waiter was great at helping us put together a dish that would be safe for her to eat. He worked directly with the kitchen to get all the info we needed on what was safe and what we should steer clear of.
I would/will recommend this place to anyone and everyone. Whether you like great service, great beer, great food, but especially to those who have someone with celiac, this is a must. This is a restaurant brewery where the owner is involved and walks the floor talking to guests
The food was excellent. Our server was very sweet and I loved the blankets at each place setting at the outdoor tables. I also appreciate the fact that there are many items on the menu that they offer gluten free substitutions for. ❤️
Very good coffee, food and staff is great. If this is your first time in Custer, this is a stop you dont want to miss! So many different things to choose from and have gluten free options.
The best meal of our vacation to South Dakota. Not only did they offer gluten free crust, but the toppings were first-class, the service was friendly and the place itself was cool and welcoming. The perfect lunch spot during a busy day in the Black Hills.
I came here solo on my staycation in the hills. Coming up the street, the aroma of the food wafting from the restaurant, smelled amazing!
When I walked in the door, I was greeted warmly and the place was bustling. I had reserved a counter spot and the hostess asked if I would like to wait a few moments for a table; I chose to remain at the counter. That was a great choice! One of the best parts of my meal was being able to watch the chef and his team prepare each dish. Everyone worked together like a well-oiled machine.
My server was attentive and noticed that on my reservation, I indicated that I have a gluten intolerance. Throughout the meal, he guided me to the options on the menu that didn’t contain gluten or could be modified.
The food came quickly and was beyond delicious; I savored every bite. I ordered the foie gras for an app and the steak as an entree. I was too full for dessert but will certainly leave room next time I visit to try it.
Also loved to see children welcomed to this fine dining establishment.
I have to shout out Buglin' Bull. I was in Custer for my brother's wedding and I have food sensitivities. Their menu was able to accommodate me each night for dinner. I had their Roasted Apple Spinach salad with chicken twice (because it was so good!), and The Bull burger with a gluten free bun (no onion though!) on another night. It's difficult for me to scavenge for food when traveling, and it was nice to find a place not far from where I was staying with food I could eat!
This place has the best corn tortillas that I’ve ever had in my entire life! Try the corn tacos & you can’t go wrong! Red Salsa & tortilla chips were great too! The waitress, Leslie, was a pro! She didn’t baulk at my gluten free questions for a second! She was terrific! If I’m in Custer again, this is a no-Brainer decision! Maria’s Mexican all the way!
The BEST Ice Cream I’ve Ever Had — Hands Down!
If you’re anywhere near Custer, South Dakota and don’t stop at Horatio’s Homemade Ice Cream… you are seriously missing out. I’ve had a lot of ice cream in my life, but NOTHING compares to this place. It’s in a league of its own.
Now here’s the twist — I recently had to go dairy-free AND gluten-free, and I was bracing for a life of sad, flavorless “alternatives.” But Horatio’s proved me wrong in the most delicious way possible. Their dairy-free and gluten-free options aren’t just “good for being dairy-free”… they’re just plain amazing. Creamy, rich, packed with flavor — you’d never know they’re allergen-friendly.
You can tell this place puts heart and soul into every scoop. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere is cozy and charming, and the quality is out of this world. This isn’t just dessert — it’s an experience.
Trust me: whether you’re a classic cone lover or navigating dietary needs like I am, Horatio’s is the place to go. Don’t walk — RUN. 🍦✨
